Kenny’s Back
Usually when guys sit out the nationals and come back for a single, random race, it doesn’t go well. But Ken Roczen is different, and if there’s anyone who’s capable of jumping back into the fray and performing, it’s him. He randomly raced Unadilla last year and went 7-6 for seventh overall, and in 2023 he came off the bench to race High Point, where he went 7-2 for second overall. He even led laps that day! Will Kenny have more magic this weekend at Unadilla? -Aaron Hansel
That Winning Feeling
Hunter Lawrence did plenty of winning in the 250 Class, but until Ironman, he hadn’t been able to find the top step of the podium in the 450 Class. He’d been on the podium more often than not, and had even won motos, but the overall win had proved elusive until last Saturday. But now that he’s got that first one under his belt, you’ve got to wonder if there are more coming. Can Hunter keep it going at Unadilla?
Prado Potential
Jorge Prado’s results this summer have been underwhelming, especially for a multi-time MXGP champ, but things looked like they might be taking a turn for the better at Ironman, where Prado went 5-6 for fifth overall. Prado is certainly capable of more, but that result is much better than most of the rides he’s had so far in Pro Motocross. Afterward Prado credited bike changes for his improvement. Could Prado and Monster Energy Kawasaki have finally found a setup that will allow Prado to show his potential? -Hansel
450 Title Math
Despite incurring a one lap penalty for accidentally jumping the gate last week (which resulted in 17th place in the first moto), Jett Lawrence still holds a 47-point lead over Hunter Lawrence in second. That means that if Jett is able to increase that lead by just three points at Unadilla, which seems more likely than not, he’ll clinch the championship a round early. Eli Tomac is still technically in contention in third, but he’s 88 points back of Jett and isn’t really a factor. Look for Jett to try to wrap up his second 450 AMA Pro Motocross Championship this weekend. -Hansel
250 Title Math
Jo Shimoda is the only rider Haiden Deegan hasn’t mathematically eliminated from the title fight in the 250 Class, but he’s barely hanging on. Deegan leads Shimoda by 51 points with just four motos remaining, which means all Deegan has to do clinch the championship one round early is not give up more than one point to Shimoda. Deegan has six wins, which is more than Shimoda can match, so if Deegan ends Unadilla with a 50-point lead (or more) he wins the title. -Hansel
Up and Down
Jordon Smith has had some great motos this summer, but unfortunately, he rarely seems to have two in a row, leaving him with overall finishes that haven’t reflected just how good he is. At Ironman, for example, he was sixth in the first moto but tangled with another rider early in the second moto and crashed. He took 19th in that moto for 12th overall. Smith is capable of a much better overall result; he just needs to put two solid motos together. Can he do it at Unadilla? -Hansel
Return
Dylan Ferrandis was back at Ironman and scored impressive 7-8 moto scores for seventh overall. Dylan was out with a leg injury from supercross but said the time off the bike allowed his whole body to recover and he is feeling great on the bike. How will he do this weekend at Unadilla, a place he normally does good at? -Sarah Whitmore
Podium Repeat?
RJ Hampshire said he would be on the podium in the 450 class before summer was over and he made good on his promise at Ironman, going 3-4 for second overall. While most thought his aggressive, on the edge riding style would not work on the 450, somehow it has had the opposite effect, and he has been very impressive on the bigger machine. Now that he has a taste of the podium, can he pull it off again this weekend? -Whitmore
Return Of The Kiwi
With so many riders going out with injuries, it is always nice to see them return. Cole Davies who broke his arm at the supercross finale has been back on the bike for a while now and will line back up this weekend at Unadilla. Of course, it will be hard to judge in his first race back (and his first Pro Motocross race), but will Cole’s supercross skills carry over to the outdoors? -Whitmore
WMX
The second to last round of WMX is this weekend and the racing has been great so far! We were hoping to see a Lala Turner/Charli Cannon battle at Ironman, but Charli got a bad start in the first moto and a flat tire in the second moto (still managed to come in second with a flat). Will Charli have anything for her this weekend, or will Turner run away with it again? -Whitmore
Bonus: Two New Debutants
After Kade Johnson and Gavin Betts both made the jump from the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch last weekend in Indiana, this weekend we will have two different riders making their respective pro debuts here this weekend: Landon Gibson and Caden Dudney. Both young, but fast, factory riders are excited to dip their feet in the waters against the top dogs. How will they fare their first go round? Keep an eye out for these two: Gibson running #723 and Dudney running #400. -Mitch Kendra
