Morning Report
Welcome to a frigid Indianapolis, and round 12 of Monster Energy Supercross. Lucas Oil Stadium will host the first of two East/West Showdowns (Vegas will host the second) and there are plenty of storylines to follow. First, we’ll brief you on how the schedule will break down.
250SX West and East will have separate qualifying and heat races. There will also be “overflow” 250 practices, which will include East and West.
The top nine from each heat will advance to the combined main event, with the last four coming from the combined LCQ. Both West and East riders will earn points toward the championship in the main event. These points will be based on overall finishing position, not specific regions.
The race will mark the seventh round of the West Region and the sixth round of the East Region.
The points lead in the 250SX West Region, which hasn’t raced since February 10 in San Diego, belongs to Aaron Plessinger, who holds a four-point cushion over Joey Savatgy. Shane McElrath is 16 points back in third. The East Region is also locked in a tight points race, with defending champion Zach Osborne eight points clear of Austin Forkner following his win last weekend in St. Louis. Jordon Smith is 13 points back in third. Each championship has a chance to turn dramatically this weekend. Here are ten storylines to watch for.
Position | Rider | Hometown | Points |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Aaron Plessinger | Hamilton, OH | 212 |
2 | Adam Cianciarulo | Port Orange, FL | 209 |
3 | Shane McElrath | Canton, NC | 193 |
4 | Joey Savatgy | Thomasville, GA | 193 |
5 | Chase Sexton | La Moille, IL | 167 |
Position | Rider | Hometown | Points |

1 | Zach Osborne | Abingdon, VA | 196 |
2 | Jordon Smith | Belmont, NC | 188 |
3 | Jeremy Martin | Millville, MN | 175 |
4 | Austin Forkner | Richards, MO | 137 |
5 | Luke Renzland | Hewitt, NJ | 118 |
In 250 injury news, Justin Hill is back after breaking some toes while moonlighting in 450SX. He won the last 250SX West round in San Diego. Both Martin Davalos and Alex Martin are out for this weekend. Go here for a full injury report. Blake Wharton is back in action after a four-year hiatus. He’s filling in on the West Region for IB Corp Racing for the remainder of supercross.
Eli Tomac was incredible last weekend and is seeking his sixth win on the year tonight. It may not matter for Tomac, as he sits fourth in points and 60 points back of Jason Anderson. Marvin Musquin is 42 points back of Anderson in second.
After missing last weekend due to a shoulder injury, Cooper Webb is a race-time decision. We'll update after his status after qualifying.
An early schedule this weekend. Qualifying begins at 12:30 p.m. EDT / 9:30 a.m. PDT on Racer X Online and Supercrosslive.com. FS1 (FOX Sports 1) will carry coverage of round 12 beginning at 6:30 p.m. EDT / 3:30 p.m. PDT.
First Practice
East Region
The first 250 qualifying sessions have wrapped up inside Lucas Oil Stadium. No surprises up front in the 250 East Region, as Zach Osborne, Jeremy Martin, Austin Forkner, and Jordon Smith set the fastest times.
Jeremy Martin was the early pace-setter, as he quickly put down a 46.097, a time that would hold until Forkner put in a 46.019. Forkner’s lead was brief, though, as Martin was the first to drop into the 45s with a 45.862.
On the same lap, Osborne also dropped into the 45s with a 45.690, which was good enough for the top time in session one. Martin, Forker, Smith, and Kyle Peters rounded out the top five.

5 | Kyle Peters | 46.939 | Greensboro, NC | Suzuki RM-Z250 |
West Region
In the West Region, it was Chase Sexton, from nearby in Illinois, who set the fastest time with a 45.890. Points leader Aaron Plessinger was the only other rider in the 45s, with a 45.980.
“I think it suits me. I grew up with this kind of dirt,” Sexton told the stadium announcers of the track.
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammates Joey Savatgy and Adam Cianciarulo would swap the top spot early. Cianciarulo had a pretty bad crash in the rhythm section prior to the finish in the untimed session, but returned to finish third in the first qualifying. Savatgy took fourth ahead of Shane McElrath.
Autotrader/Yoshimura Suzuki’s Justin Hill is apparently dealing with an illness and is a scratch for tonight. Hill did not participate in either the untimed or first timed session.

Overflow
In his first race since 2014, Blake Wharton looked great in the first timed “Overflow” session, setting a 47.228 to take the top time by more than two seconds over second-place Vann Martin.
Wharton’s 47.228 puts him sixth fastest in 250SX West after one session.

450SX
Despite a pretty bad crash early in the session, Eli Tomac picked up right where he left off last weekend and set the fastest time in 450SX session one with a 44.741.
By the time the session took off, the whoops were already pretty much flattened. We’ll see how they develop throughout the rest of the day.
Not much separating the top guys. The rhythm prior to the finish looks like it will play a big factor. Other than that, everyone is pretty much doing the same thing.
Dean Wilson looked good in the first session, setting the second fastest time over Christian Craig and Marvin Musquin. Justin Brayton continued his recent hot streak, setting the fifth-fastest time.

Second Practices
East Region
GEICO Honda’s Jeremy Martin took the top spot overall in the East Region with a 44.579 in the second qualifying session. The times were much better the second time around, with Martin and Forkner both in the 44s. Forkner went down late in the session in the rhythm section prior to the finish, but he did get up and walk off the track.
Points leader Zach Osborne was third fastest overall with a 45.132. Jordon Smith, who was fourth fastest, also went down in the rhythm prior to the finish. He was also able to get up and walk off the track.
CycleTrader/Rock River Yamaha’s Brandon Hartranft continues to improve in his rookie season, as he was fifth fastest ahead of Thomas Ramette, Michale Mosiman, Kyle Peters, Anthony Rodriguez, and Luke Renzland.
At the end of the session, Mosiman went flying over the berm and into the nets. He hit the nets so hard they actually broke. The track crew had to flatten the turn for the final 450 practices because they couldn’t get the net repaired in time. The 250 riders will not have hit the new turn before their heat races. We'll see if they can figure it out quickly.

Joey Savatgy just edged Aaron Plessinger to take the top time in 250 West. Savatgy’s 44.122 was four-thousandths faster than Plessinger’s 44.126.
Shane McElrath snuck in a late fast time to grab third over Adam Cianciarulo and Chase Sexton.
Blake Wharton controlled the 250 overflow session and qualified sixth fastest with a 45.368.

450SX
The second 450 qualifying session was delayed as the track crew made changes to the bowl turn at the end of the rhythm section prior to the finish. When Mosiman broke the nets at the end of the 250 East session, it forced the track crew to flatten the bowl turn, as well as the last jump at the end of the triple. The 450 guys were still tripling in and an inside rut developed, so it should be okay.
Eli Tomac was the first rider into the 43s, but his 43.965 was only good enough for second, as Marvin Musquin put in a 43.319 on lap six to take fastest overall.
Points leader Jason Anderson also dipped into the 43s with a 43.972.
Broc Tickle, Justin Brayton, Dean Wilson, Cooper Webb, Christian Craig, Malcolm Stewart, and Vince Friese rounded out the top ten.

250SX Heat Race 1 (West Region)
Shane McElrath took the first holeshot of the night with Pro Circuit teammates Adam Cianciarulo and Joey Savatgy in tow. Blake Wharton and Hayden Mellross rounded out the top five.
There wasn’t much movement between the top three on the opening laps; the real charge was coming from points leader Aaron Plessinger. After a start outside the top five, Plessinger moved past Wharton and began his attack on Savatgy.
On lap 7, McElrath’s grip on the lead began to slip, as Cianciarulo pulled to within a second. Just after the finish to begin lap 8, Cianciarulo pulled the trigger and got into the lead.
McElrath wasn’t in the clear, as Savatgy and Plessinger were closing in as well. Plessinger moved into third just after the finish on lap 9 and began to close on McElrath on the final lap. Plessinger was close heading into the final rhythm, but McElrath was able to hang on. Plessinger took third ahead of Savatgy. After a bad start, Chase Sexton charged back to fifth. Wharton finished sixth to make his first main event since 2014.
Phil Nicoletti and Mitchell Harrison took the final transfer spots.

250 Heat 2 (East Region)
Kyle Peters grabbed the holeshot in the second heat (East Region) over Austin Forkner. A huge pileup in the whoops claimed Michael Mosiman, Josy Osby, and Sean Cantrell.
Forkner quickly moved into the lead and was followed by Osborne. The two title contenders slugged it out throughout the rest of the heat, with Osborne closing, only to see Forkner recover and hold off the vet. Osborne closed again on the final lap, but again was shut down at every opportunity. Forkner held on to win by one second.
Martin finished third ahead of Peters. Jordon Smith overcame a bad start to finish fifth. Thomas Ramette, Anthony Rodgriguez, Jacob Williamson, and Luke Renzland transfer to the main.

450 Heat 1
Eli Tomac has yet to cool off. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider took the holeshot in heat 1 and never looked back, cruising to a 4.4 second win over Christian Craig.
Chad Reed started second with Craig third. Reed held Craig off until lap 4 when Craig made the pass stick at the end of the whoops. Reed would lose another spot to Broc Tickle later in the race.
Tyler Bowers finished fifth ahead of Benny Bloss, Vince Friese, Dean Wilson, and Ben LaMay.

450 Heat 2
Justin Brayton took the holeshot in the second heat over Blake Baggett, Weston Peick, Jason Anderson, Cooper Webb and Malcolm Stewart.
Brayton, who is arguably in the best form of his career, slowly pulled away from Baggett, as the KTM rider was left to fend off a charging Jason Anderson.
Anderson eventually did make the pass, but proceeded to make a mistake in the first rhythm section which allowed Baggett to pull back up. But Anderson was quadding in the rhythm and Baggett wasn’t, which allowed Anderson to pull back away.
After a poor start, Marvin Musquin charged through the field to pass Webb for fourth. The pass was clean, but Webb turned down too quick and clipped the back of Musquin’s wheel and went down. Webb finished eighth.
At checkers it was Brayton 3.5 seconds clear of Anderson. Baggett took third ahead of Musquin, Peick, Malcolm Stewart, Cedric Soubeyras, Webb, and Kyle Cunningham.

250 LCQ
Sean Cantrell grabbed the holeshot in the combined LCQ. A huge pileup claimed Dakota Alix, Josh Osby and Martin Castelo in the first rhythm section. All three eventually got up under their own power.
Kyle Chisholm tracked Cantrell down for the lead and eventually made a pass stick. The real battle came for the final transfer spot between Justin Starling and Josh Cartwright. The two traded the position a few times, but entering the final lap it was Starling that held fourth. Cartwright pulled even in the whoops and the two were side-by-side through the next rhythm. Cartwright looked to make a move in the last rhythm, but made a mistake and Starling held on. Brandon Hartranft finished third.

450 LCQ
Carlen Gardner was the early leader in the 450 LCQ and lead start to finish to capture the win.
Dylan Merrimam, Chase Marquier, AJ Catanzaro held down the final transfer spots in the early going. Catanzaro was still in a transfer spot late when he went down in the first rhythm section.
This allowed Adam Enticknap into the final transfer spot. Gardner, Merriam, Cody Vanbuskirk, Enticknap all transferred to the main.

250 Main Event
That’s why they run the races. No one had Anthony Rodriguez and Luke Renzland running two-three early. Not many people had Jeremy Martin leading. But that’s how the 250 main unfolded early.
Both points leaders—Zach Osborne and Aaron Plessinger—were at the back of the pack on the start. Osborne clipped a Tuff Block and was at one point dead last.
Out front, Martin was building a lead over A-Rod, Renzland, Smith, and Harrison. The Pro Circuit trio of Adam Cianciarulo, Joey Savatgy and Austin Forkner were battling behind. Renzland eventually got around A-Rod, as did Smith.
Cianciarulo broke away from the Pro Circuit pack and pulled close to Smith. It took until lap 14 until he was finally able to get around and then he went after Renzland. On the final lap, Cianciarulo dove in on Renzland prior to the whoops and made the pass stick. Renzland would finish third for his first career podium.
Behind the leaders, a lot was happening. Joey Savatgy washed out before the first rhythm and finished tenth. Plessinger was a man on a mission and charged from 17th (after lap 1) to come all the way back to fifth. With Savatgy’s tenth, he still gained points in the championship despite the bad start.
Osborne’s charge took a while to get going, but he made it all the way to seventh, just one spot behind title rival Forkner.
Up front, Martin was riding a near flawless race and lead start to finish to claim his first win of the year by four seconds over AC.

450 Main Event
This had all the makings of a heavyweight title fight. Instead, it went south for one of the hottest riders on the circuit. Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin got the holeshot, while points leader Jason Anderson, Blake Baggett, Tyler Bowers, and Cooper Webb all were involved in a first turn pileup.
Eli Tomac quickly moved into second and the showdown was on—for a few laps anyway. Tomac pulled close to Musquin a few times, and then Musquin would stretch it back out. The lead never got over three seconds, though, and the battle could have gone the distance. But then Tomac made a huge mistake. He came up short in the first rhythm section while trying to quad. He slowly moved to the side of the track and sat on a Tuff Block. Eventually he did get back on the bike and finished out the race. But a 15th was not what anyone expected.
With Tomac out, Musquin’s lead ballooned to more than 20 seconds over second place Wilson. Wilson was dealing with his own battle, as Broc Tickle moved around Brayton and began to close on Wilson. Tickle eventually did get the spot, but a few laps later he went down. He recovered and was in second, but shortly after Wilson went in hard at the end of the whoops and Tickle went down. He eventually finished fifth.
Brayton challenged Wilson down the stretch but wasn’t able to make a pass stick. Wilson took second for his first career podium. Brayton finished third.
After going down in the first turn, Jason Anderson charged all the way back to fourth. Malcolm Stewart finished sixth ahead of Cooper Webb, Benny Bloss, Chad Reed, and Blake Baggett.
