After winning the 2024 Women’s Motocross (WMX) Championship, Lachlan Turner has been in leading the points through three rounds, heading into the break in the schedule and the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship. Turner would face some different competition at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch but still be racing Kyleigh Stallings and Jordan Jarvis, both fast and tough competition from the WMX series.
But at the Ranch, Turner was unbeatable in the Women's division, going 1-1-1 for the title. Turner even raced the 250 B Limited class against the boys, serving as one of several different female riders competing against males in different classes. Turner finished 29-16-9 for 19th overall, landing inside the top ten in the final moto after running as high as seventh. That class has some serious talent, too, so this is impressive.
Afterwards, I caught up to Turner, who revealed she has been riding through a shoulder surgery…since March! She has won four of the five WMX motos raced so far this summer then put on a clinic at Loretta Lynn’s. Aside from seeing tape on her shoulder after one of the motos this week, you could not tell she is nursing an injury.
See what Turner says about her week at the Ranch, mixing it in with the boys now and hopefully more in the future, some smack talk on her older brother, and more.
Race X: Lachlan Turner here at Loretta Lynn's Ranch. Walk us through your week of racing.
Lachlan Turner: Honestly, it was a dream come true. I went 1-1-1 here, clean sweep. And then I raced the boys class. That was more fun than the girls, obviously. [Laughs] But, yeah, I was super pumped to do decent in the boys [class]. I know I am hungry for more, but we'll come back swinging and put the hammer down for more.
A 1-1-1 week. Starts were good, I think you had one small tip over yesterday, but riding was pretty good all week. You're sending the big jumps. You look like you're flowing pretty well out there, just clicking on all cylinders compared to last year. I think last year you're coming in a little bit banged up after your injury, right? Does it feel like just easier with no injuries coming in here this year?
I actually have a dislocated shoulder.
Well, nevermind then!
Yeah, they taped it, but, yeah, it's dislocated. It's back in, but it pops out occasionally.
Is that from the WMX Championship? Is that from here?
It happened right before [WMX started]...I went over to Australia [for the FIM Women's Oceania Cup]. So, it's not going to get fixed unless I get it [fixed with] surgery. So, we're going to hope for it to last until the end of the year, and then we'll get surgery and we'll be solid.
I was going to say I feel like last year, like you had your injury, and you were switching back between a small bike and a big bike. But I guess you have an injury now, that's crazy. You cannot tell. Okay, then you raced from what, that was March, right?
Yeah, that was March.
So, you've been racing for five/four months or whatever it is with that?
Yeah. It's a long recovery, so we're trying to make it last. [Laughs]
Okay, so do you feel like you could be even better then?
Oh, yeah, I can definitely.
What percentage are you at, like 90 percent out there?
Yeah. It just starts to like it just bugs me a little bit when I ride, but I just deal with it.
I can't even tell because you're really flying out there getting all the jumps. Okay, so then that makes this week even better then. I guess I’ve got to ask you too, the younger girls are ripping pretty well. Yumena [Berning] did really well and Raycin Kyler, Hannah Jamison, and Mayla Herrick. There's so many girls doing well. Do you chat with them? What's it like seeing them do well? The future of the sport is right there.
Oh, yeah. It's definitely super cool because most of them look up to me because I haven't done this for long, but since I've been here, I've been making a change. And they're ripping, so it's definitely cool seeing up and coming girls.
You mentioned mixing in with the boys. How was that class and what was that like, learning wise? And I guess kind of a new experience a little bit, right?
Yeah. Racing with the boys makes me definitely faster and more aggressive. Yesterday I had lap times of, like, running P3, but I had two tip overs. I was up there and then I went back to 17th and I got caught back up to seventh and then last lap I got passed. But it's all good. [Laughs]
Was that something like maybe like next year you want to come and do the same thing against the boys, right?
Oh yeah. I definitely want to get a podium next year.
Can you compare the track, riding with those guys versus riding in the Women's class? Is it like completely different, nerves wise, track wise? Like, how does it compare?
Well, honestly, I'm just out here having fun. Like I said before, if I win, I win. But yeah, in the boys class, I don't know, they definitely make me stronger and more aggressive. The girls are more scarier to ride with because they are just like all over the place. But yeah, they're trying their best out there, but that's all that matters.
Is there more nerves going against the guys? Because the racing is a little bit different.
Yeah not really nerves, no.
Your week on the track was pretty good. What are some highlights off the bike? Did you go in creek at all? Get some ice cream?
[Laughs] I haven't had any ice cream, I’ve been locked in. I needed to win. But I went in the creek once. Had just been in the camper AC. Honestly, I'd just been locked in, really.
And then have you been paying attention to the Pro Sport motos? Is that something you watch? And maybe that's a class you'll race in a year or so?
Oh yeah, I'd definitely race that, eventually. Next year I'll do just B and then the next year I'll do A. But yeah, next year I'll do like [SMX Next] Combines and [SX] Futures.
And then going back to the WMX championship, that's going pretty well so far. Expectation wise, you've been doing pretty well even with the shoulder injury. Hopefully that stays together.
Yeah, it's definitely a confidence boost from I mean like a 40-second lead today going into WMX, but there's two fast girls that weren't here, so we'll see.
So, you raced Charli [Cannon] at the Oceania Cup. I know she's kind of had a finger injury. You have your shoulder [injury]. Hopefully we can just get both healthy and just really battle it out.
Yeah, when I went to Austria that's when it first happened. It kept popping out. But I know I don't really tell anyone because it's weird. But yeah, I hope she's all good.
You went there to race her, and team USA went there and did pretty well. What's it like to have her come here?
It's definitely really cool. We get more people looking at us because we got international girls. Like, there's one person from China here, which is super cool.
I was wondering about the tape because I saw you had a bunch of tape on your shoulder, but that explains it. Anything else you like to add about the week here at the Ranch?
Good time.
Oh 47 is that...
Yeah, that's my that's my brother's old number.
I was wondering if that was a shout-out to him or not.
Yeah. He was supposed to come here, but he didn't know I was 47, so he's kind of butthurt that he didn't come. But I represented it.
What's he doing? He's just sitting at home?
Yeah, he's chilling.
Does he text you after the race? Does he give you feedback as he's watching? What's that like?
Yeah. He calls me all the time after every single race and just talks to me, yeah.
You guys have a cool relationship. I told him, I think like maybe a month or so ago after one of the races, the supercross feature they did on TV was pretty cool.
Yeah, it was very cool that they did that.
So, what's it like because you're racing on Fridays at the nationals and he races on Saturdays. I know you don't train at the same place all the time. So, what's it like being able to be at the same track and at the same race together? And you could just hang out and like it's an amateur event, when you did all of the things together, right?
Yeah, it's definitely cool because he has one coming for him! I'm gonna be faster than him. That's what I want to do. [Laughs] But yeah, it's cool that we are different places, but it's also like, kind of sad that we're at different places. Hopefully one day we'll be on the same team and train back together again.
So, long term goal is not to qualify for pro nationals?
Yeah. Definitely race pro nationals and do supercross like everyone else.
That's awesome. And then anything else like that we didn't cover?
I think that's good.
