  • Jo Shimoda (Broken Fingers) to Ride Press Day Then Make Decision on Racing Anaheim 2 SX
Anaheim, CA Anaheim 2Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship

We have an update on Jo Shimoda heading into the third round of Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship. Shimoda, who won the opening round 250SX main event at the Anaheim 1 SX, caught a stray pit board to his left hand during the second qualifying session of round two in San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium. After qualifying, our own Aaron Hansel learned from the team the Japanese rider suffered two broken fingers in the incident.

Still, Shimoda lined up for the night show. He toughed it out to finish seventh in his heat race and not have to race the LCQ, then bagged a seventh as well in the main event. His 1-7 finishes have him third in the standings (40 points) just seven behind San Diego 250SX main event winner Julien Beaumer (47 points) and two behind Jordon Smith (42 points). After seeing the photos of his hand post-race, it is impressive to know what he was dealing with.

Shimoda’s status for this weekend’s Anaheim 2 SX round was unknown, but this afternoon Honda provided us an update. At the moment, it sounds like Shimoda will ride Friday’s press day session and then decide on if he will be able to race on Saturday. We will provide an update Friday afternoon as soon as possible. It’s not over for the Anaheim 1 winner, at least not yet!

Update: Friday, January 24, 2025, at 8:35 p.m. Eastern

The report from the track is that Jo Shimoda sat out Friday's riding session in order to get one more day to heal. He will give it a go on Saturday morning and see how he feels, making a race-day decision on if he will race or not. We will post an update in here and on social media Saturday as soon as we know his status.

Update: Saturday Morning

After riding free practice, Shimoda told us he will be racing tonight no matter what. and he's even sporting a "no pinkie no problem" buttpatch. Jo was only 19th in the first timed session but then gutted out 8th quickest later in the final session.

Update: Saturday Night

Shimoda gutted out a seventh in his heat race and then a sixth in the main event. After the race, he told TV reporter Will Christien he "did not want to let this one go." He said he cannot really do anything to help the healing process and can just work on his off-the bike fitness via a stationary bike. One more round in Arizona next weekend and then Shimoda will have until the February 22 Arlington Supercross before he races again. He sits fourth in the standings leaving tonight, down 13 points to Julien Beaumer.

"I just don't wanna let this one go, I feel like I gotta stay in it." - Jo Shimoda, after his sixth place finish tonight. #Supercross #SupercrossLIVE #SuperMotocross #SX2025 #SMX2025
