Twenty-eight "regular season" races this year saw three all-new AMA Supercross champions crowned, followed by two first-time champions in AMA Pro Motocross. Now comes the three-round SMX Playoffs and World Championship.
zMAX Dragway at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, will host this weekend’s first SMX Playoff round, followed by Texas Motor Speedway (September 14) in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Las Vegas, Nevada (September 21). This is the second year of the SMX Playoffs—and the second SMX event at zMAX Dragway after the first ever SMX Playoff event this time last year. Teams, riders, and fans all have a better understanding of what to expect. Just a few days from the first playoff race of this season, the field is nearly finalized for both the 250SMX and 450SMX fields.
Note that like all racing, entry lists are subject to change as race day nears.
Haiden Deegan (250SMX) and Chase Sexton (450SMX) enter the SMX Playoffs leading their respective class.
250SMX Field
Guaranteed Spots (1-20)
Reigning 2023 250SMX Champion Haiden Deegan, second in the 2024 250SX East Region Championship and champion in the 250 Class of Pro Motocross, enters with the qualifying points lead over Levi Kitchen (second in 250SX West Region Championship, third in Pro Motocross) and Tom Vialle (250SX East Region Champion and second in Pro Motocross). Honda HRC teammates Jo Shimoda and Chance Hymas round out the top five, as Shimoda is returning from his broken collarbone suffered the second week of August at the Unadilla National. RJ Hampshire, who missed all but the final two rounds of Pro Motocross with a wrist injury, comes into the playoffs 13th in 250SMX points after his championship-winning 250SX West Region run earlier this year. (And, Hampshire was very fast at the MX finale, where he scored an overall podium. Only if we got to see him battle Deegan, Vialle, Kitchen, and Hymas all summer, oh what could have been!)
From the top 20 guaranteed a spot in every SMX moto in the 250SMX, so far only one rider is announced to not be competing. Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Daxton Bennick will sit out the SMX Playoffs this fall in order to focus on being fully healthy entering the 2025 calendar year. For the second straight season, Bennick will not participate in the hybrid format SMX events.
Garrett Marchbanks qualified 19th and is racing his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki KX250 after racing the final three MX rounds back with Mitch Payton’s team. Jalek Swoll (eighth) and Joey Savatgy (17th) both qualified for Triumph Racing but we have heard rumors regarding Savatgy's participation in SMX. He did not compete in Supercross this year (Savatgy is not eligible for 250SX and Triumph doesn't yet make a 450). We'll see by the weekend if he's racing or not.
Nate Thrasher (collarbone injury) and Cameron McAdoo (shoulder injury) will both be returning from their respective injuries for the playoffs. Thrasher is in the final spot (20th) guaranteed a spot in the motos, whereas McAdoo will have to transfer into the motos from the LCQ at all three individual SMX events. McAdoo qualified 23rd and into the LCQ entry list, plus he had at least one SX win, which would have guaranteed him a spot in the LCQs had he not been top 30.
Deegan comes into the playoffs with 25 points, Kitchen 22 points, Vialle 20 points, and so on down through Thrasher (20th), who comes in with two points. The LCQ riders will enter with zero points each. Remember, first event is single points (25 points for overall win), second SMX event is double points (50 points for overall win), and the finale is triple points (75 points for overall win).
With the winner-takes-all points up for grabs, this could be anyone's title. Remember at one point during last year's SMX Finale where Jordon Smith was in position to win the inaugural SuperMotocross World Championship—anything can happen!
LCQ Spots (21-30)
As mentioned, McAdoo will be in the LCQs. We believe Talon Hawkins, Jett Reynolds, Carson Mumford (Fire Power Parts Honda debut), Cole Thompson, Henry Miller, rookie Mark Fineis, Robbie Wageman, and Lux Turner will also be at the races. While these riders might not have all been inside the top 30 in 250SMX qualifying points, they were the next available riders that confirmed they would race. These riders will have to qualify into the motos at all three rounds. Win the LCQ at the opening event, you still have to race it at the second round and the finale.
Note, the LCQ riders are subject to change.

450SMX Field
Guaranteed Spots (1-20)
Chase Sexton, newly crowned 450 Class Pro Motocross Champion, leads the 450SMX qualifying over Hunter Lawrence. Jason Anderson quietly snuck into third by the end of Pro Motocross as rookie Justin Cooper and 450SX Champion Jett Lawrence round out the top five. Anderson making every race to date this year and getting solid results puts him in a good position for a shot at the SMX title. Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac are tenth and 11th entering the playoffs after both missed almost all of Pro Motocross due to thumb injuries. Ken Roczen qualified 13th after suffering a leg injury late in the supercross season in Nashville, Tennessee. European rider Harri Kullas qualified 18th after a solid season in Pro Motocross, and none other than Kyle Chisholm took the 20th and final guaranteed spot in the motos.
Sexton comes into the playoffs with 25 points, Hunter Lawrence 22 points, Anderson 20 points, and so on down through Chisholm (20th), who comes in with two points.
LCQ Spots (21-30)
We believe Dean Wilson, Justin Hill, Romain Pape, Derek Kelley, Cullin Park, Colt Nichols, Jeremy Hand, Anthony Rodriguez, Jerry Robin, and Cade Clason are in for the LCQ races. Again, while these riders might not have all been inside the top 30 in qualifying points, they were the next available riders that confirmed they would race. These riders will have to qualify into the motos at all three rounds. Win the LCQ at the opening event, you still have to race it at the second round and the finale.
Note, the LCQ riders are subject to change.
