When 2018 Monster Energy Supercross Champion Jason Anderson broke his foot in a practice crash a few days before round three of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross, he said he hoped to be back by the Unadilla round. That race is this weekend, and Anderson will not be racing, but his team is optimistic he will be back soon—possibly by next weekend at Budds Creek.
"We are currently taking it 'day by day' to ensure that Anderson is being productive on the track, as well as being vigilant with his rehab related to his unfortunate and complex injury," Rockstar Energy team manager Bobby Hewitt said in a very articulate text message to us yesterday. "The good news is... Jason is making huge improvements daily, and we expect that he will be able to return to racing in the very near future. Jason and I communicate every afternoon to review his daily progress so that I am able to communicate his progress to those in the media, Husqvarna, and my staff who are involved in his return to racing. That being said, we will review his progress and his ability to return to racing each day in hopes that he will return as soon as possible. Currently, myself and the staff have not set a date or a specific event for Jason's return, but I’m confident that Jason will be back on the starting line for AMA Outdoor Motocross soon. Obviously, my first priority is Jason's safety! It is very important to both Jason and I that we are representing both Rockstar Husqvarna Factory Racing and all of our sponsors at the highest level possible."
In his text, Hewitt pegged Anderson's chances of returning next weekend at Budds Creek at 95 percent, and said there's a 100 percent chance of returning by Ironman in two weeks. Racer X will check in with the team again next week to see if those odds still stand.
Anderson was originally motivated to return in order to secure a slot on the U.S. Motocross of Nations team for RedBud. He appears out of time, though, as the team is scheduled to be announced this Saturday. It will be interesting to see where Anderson slots in once he's back on the track. He finished second in the last moto he raced this summer, the second moto at Glen Helen, round two.
