The third round of the FIM World Motocross Championship took place today at Valkenswaard in southern Netherlands.
Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings dominated his home Grand Prix, winning the second moto by more than a minute over second place Pauls Jonass to remain unbeaten at the venue. The win also marked the 50th Grand Prix win of his career at just 21 years old. Jonass would take second ahead of Jeremy Seewer.
Following another 1-1 performance, Herlings leads Jonass by thirty-eight points after just three rounds.
American Thomas Covington scored zero points on the day and after the race announced on Instagram that he sustained a broken ankle testing last week. “Not how I pictured this season starting. Electrical problem in Qatar, food poisoning in Thailand and then testing last week broke my ankle. Tried to race with it this weekend in Valkanswaard but the pain was holding me back too much. Hopefully it will be healed up a bit for Argentina in a couple weeks.”
In MXGP, Romain Febvre extended his championship lead with a last lap pass on Antonio Cairoli in the second moto to steal the win and the overall. The pass also knocked Cairoli off the overall podium, with Max Nagl and first moto winner Tim Gajser claiming the spots.
Following three rounds, Febvre holds a thirteen-point lead over Gajser.
