The first round of the 2016 FIM World Motocross Championship begins this weekend at Losail in Qatar. We previewed the 2016 season earlier this week, which you can check on here.
On Friday, the first qualifying races of the season (to determine gate picks for tomorrow’s race) were run. In MX2, Red Bull KTM’s Jeffrey Herlings returned after missing most of last season to secure the win over Dylan Ferrandis and Pauls Jonass—last year’s MX2 runner-up. American Thomas Covington had a reported mechanical problem and finished twenty-fourth.
In MXGP, Evgeny Bobryshev topped 2015 MX2 world champion Tim Gajser, with defending MXGP champion Romain Febvre in third. Eight-time world champion Antonio Cairoli finished fourth.
Clement Desalle, who broke his arm last week, only put in two laps before pulling out of the race. He finished twenty-first.
Live coverage of tomorrow’s race can be seen on MXGP-TV.com beginning at 8:10 a.m. EST.
