With a clear field ahead of him from the start, Eli Tomac proved he can put in fast, consistent laps to pull away right off the start. The GEICO Honda rider grabbed the MotorcycleSuperstore.com holeshot and never looked back. Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin and MyPlash Star Racing Yamaha’s Cooper Webb were right there, but neither of them were able to edge up to Tomac in the first lap. Similar to 250 moto one, Webb crashed on the first lap—just as Bogle did—and Musquin held second from start to finish.
Musquin didn’t go unchallenged, though. GEICO Honda’s Zach Osborne and Justin Bogle battled briefly before Osborne secured third place, then the two hammered out quite a few laps in attempt to catch Musquin. Ken Roczen caught up to the GEICO Honda boys before they could start to focus on lines to get around Musquin. They received a little bit of breathing room when Roczen tipped his KTM over in a turn, but he kept it running and was only passed by Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett. Baggett and Roczen moved right back up behind Bogle and Osborne. Bogle dropped pace, and after putting up a valiant last-minute effort, was passed by both Baggett and Roczen.
Roczen used some creative inside- and outside-line combos near the finish-line section to successfully pass Baggett and Osborne in just a few laps. Baggett also got past Osborne to keep pace with Roczen, and actually passed him when Roczen went off the side of a tabletop. Roczen was able to stay in front of Osborne for fourth. Musquin and Baggett joined Tomac on the podium.
