Pro Taper's Tomac Wins in L.A.
January 24, 2012, 2:45pm
Corona, CA – Despite inclement weather in the Los Angeles area, round three of the seventeen stop 2012 Monster Energy Supercross series went off as scheduled in Dodger Stadium. Rain throughout the early part of the day made for an abbreviated qualifying program on Saturday afternoon. In the Lites class, Geico Honda/Pro Taper rider Eli Tomac topped the qualifying charts in the one and only session on the track.
The plan to postpone qualifying practice and keep the track covered until the rain moved through worked out perfectly. The course was in great condition all evening. Star Valli Rockstar Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes started out the evening with a bang, as the Pro Taper rider grabbed the win in the first heat race of the night. Tomac then backed up his solid qualifying effort with a second place in his heat race, also setting himself up with a good gate pick for the main event.
In the Lites main Eli was just edged out for the holeshot, but made quick work on his way to the front. Tomac led all 15 laps in route to his first win of the season. This perfect performance propelled him into the points lead with six rounds left on the schedule. Look for the number 17 sporting the red backgrounds this weekend in Oakland.
Also turning in a season’s best finish was Yoshimura Suzuki/Pro Taper rider Brett Metcalfe. The likeable Australian got the start that he has been looking for and proved that he has what it takes to run the pace. Metcalfe continues to get better every week and ended the night in Los Angeles with a solid fifth place. Brett now sits a respectable seventh place in the overall points standings, just ten points out of the top five.
The series now heads north to Oakland, CA this Saturday, January 28th. Be sure to tune in to Pro Taper’s social media sites for updates throughout the day at all of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross races.
