Marmont Clinches First Career Super X Pro Open Title
CDR Rockstar Energy Drink Yamaha’s Jay Marmont has taken out his first ever Pro Open title in the Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, with a dominant victory at Ipswich’s season finale in Queensland on Saturday, 19 November.
The 28-year-old added the Super X series to the fourth straight MX Nationals, Australian Motocross Championship, crown he clinched earlier this year. Marmont is also a former two-time 250cc Australian Supercross Champion from 2003 and 2004.
Marmont entered the Ipswich finale with a five-point buffer in the standings, but he was eager to cap off the 2011 season with a victory in the traditional 20-lap main event. That’s exactly what he did, taking the holeshot and leading from start to finish in a dominant display.
“This feels unreal because every championship is hard to win and this one has been no different,” Wollongong resident Marmont said. “This year we had to fight back after a difficult first round, but I was able to work my way from seventh to first and win the title.
“I rode how I wanted to ride tonight, knew that I had put in a lot of effort in training during motocross and supercross to be at my best. When the track was dry I definitely felt like the quickest rider out there all season. At the final round I felt like I was able to dictate the pace and bring the championship home.”
Comparing the Super X title to his MX Nationals title he won earlier this year, Marmont said that both offer special feelings when he reflects upon them. Doing the double made it all the better in a memorable year that also saw he and wife Abby welcome newborn son Jax to the family earlier this month.
“Winning the Super X title is definitely good, whereas motocross is just such hard work so that is really rewarding,” he added. “In supercross it’s so important to be consistent, but you need to win as many races as you can. Both titles feel good and I’ll be proud to wear the number one full time next season.”
Marmont’s season started with a seventh position in the mud at Melbourne in October before he gained his first podium at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium with third position. His first win came at Campbelltown’s third round, before a second at Maitland’s penultimate event marked the moment he took control of the series just one week before Ipswich’s final outing.
