CORONA, Calif. - The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki riders will come off a two-weekend break rested and ready to finish out the final four races of the season as the AMA Motocross Championship series heads to Unadilla in New Berlin, N.Y. for the ninth stop on the circuit. The 250 class championship battled tighten after the last round in Washington and Dean Wilson will look to fight off teammates Tyla Rattray, Blake Baggett, and Broc Tickle for the top of the podium in upstate New York.
Entering the ninth round with the red number plate and a 13-point lead over second, Wilson hopes to continue his podium streak in the Northeast. While a win has eluded him, Wilson’s ability to make it up onto the podium has helped him keep that red number plate since mid-June.
“It’s no secret that I want to win an overall and have been disappointed that I didn’t get the tie-breakers, but being able to keep the red plate has meant more,” said Wilson. “Now the pressure will be on over the next few weeks so I’ll do what I can to stay focused on being out front and earning as many points as possible. And a win would be nice.”
Along with Wilson, Rattray has only been off the podium one time and looks to add to his win count at Unadilla. Already earning three-wins this year, Rattray is more than ready to make his move to the top of the championship leaderboard.
“I was able to make up a few points at the last race, but I still need a big gain in order to be right there with Dean,” said Rattray. “I’ll do what I can to gain the points and hopefully the rest falls into place.”
Baggett hasn’t had a problem winning races this year as he holds a series-high five overall victories this season. Even with his high win count, Baggett is looking to gain as many points as possible, sitting third in points and 17 points behind the points leader.
“All I can do right now is try to win each moto and move closer in the points with each race,” said Baggett. “It seems like a lot of points, but I know I have the speed to be up front and go after moto wins. That is the only thing I can count on right now.”
Tickle made big plans over the break and got married in Michigan before returning to California to train for the remaining races in the series. Over the past few rounds, Tickle continued to prove he has the speed and determination to get him through the pack, earning the Ricky Carmichael Hard Charger award at Washougal.
“I felt like I rode well in Washington and I hope that I can bring that same speed to Unadilla,” said Tickle. “I just keep getting tangled up and pushed to the back of the pack. It’s frustrating, but I know that Mitch (Payton) sees that I’m working my butt off and maybe it will finally pay off in New York.”
The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team will head to East for the ninth stop of the AMA Motocross Championship at Unadilla in New Berlin, N.Y. Wilson leads the 250cc class with 346 points, while Rattray is not far behind with 333. Baggett maintains third with 329, while Tickle remained in sixth with 187 points.
