Ultra fit motocrosser Steve Ramon has taken victory at the 2011 Le Touquet Beach Race in front of 200 000 spectators that lined the French shores this past weekend.
Known as the largest beach race in the world today, Ramon was keen to add this victory to his illustrious career, as he prepares for the upcoming 2011 MX1 Grand Prix season.
Starting inside the top 5 Ramon wasted no time in getting himself into an early lead and setting the pace for the 165km sand race. With solid pit stops from the team the ‘Bomb’ was able to keep his upper hand throughout the 11 tiring laps. On the final lap Ramon realized that Jean-Claude Mousse was pushing hard, but with some energy in reserve Ramon picked up his pace and powered his Suzuki RM-Z 450 to victory, taking overall honors by just under 1 minute.
“That is an incredibly tough race, but lots of fun. With the pit stops and back markers it was pretty tough to keep track of who is around you, but I was able to keep a steady pace over the 3hrs and 7 minutes. I realized on the final lap that Mousse was on a charge, so I picked up my pace, and also at that point he made some mistakes. As I came through into the final part of the race I looked back and couldn’t see anyone at all, I was really happy to take the win in this huge event. I am going to take a rest for a few days now and then start to get ready for the first motocross international in Valance in 2 weeks.”
Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1 will now commence a busy schedule of testing and racing building up to the first round of 15 in the 2011 FIM Motocross World Championship that begins in Bulgaria on April 11th.
