AX Heads to San Antonio
February 16, 2010 1:40pm
AURORA, Ill. – The AMA Arenacross Series’ return to Youngstown, Ohio produced one of the most memorable weekends of racing in series history. This weekend, the series heads to the legendary Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas with AMA Arenacross class points leader Tyler Bowers and his Babbitt’s Monster Energy/Ti Lube Kawasaki teammates Josh Demuth and Chad Johnson leading the way. After two nights of highly competitive, unpredictable action, the championship battle is tightening up as the season heads into the second half of 2010.
Bowers has set the benchmark each and every weekend by virtue of his series-leading six victories. However, last weekend he could only garner a best result of sixth after finding trouble each night. Friday night produced a breakthrough victory as Spinechillers/Storm Lake Honda’s Zach Ames was able to grab his first-career premier class win. Additionally, Ames became just the fourth winner of the 2010 season, breaking a Babbitt’s Kawasaki stranglehold. By virtue of his woes, Bowers lost valuable ground in the standings to Demuth, who raced to his second victory of the season on Saturday and moved into the runner-up spot in the points, just 15 points behind his teammate.
The AMA Arenacross Lites Western Regional Championship returns this weekend after a short one-week break. Through two rounds, GPF Babbitt’s Kawasaki’s A.J. Catanzaro and Reynard Mods Kawasaki’s Cory Green sit in a tie atop the standings, but Catanzaro heads into Saturday night’s with momentum on his side after capturing his first-career AMA Arenacross Series victory on Friday night in Youngstown. The Western Regional Championship will take center stage in the AMA Arenacross Lites class for the next four weeks before wrapping up the season at the final round of the season from Denver.
Saturday night’s debut from one of the most well-known stadiums in the country will surely produce more memorable racing and serves as the perfect venue to kick-off the final six races of the 2010 season. Joining the fray this weekend is supercross veteran and former FIM World Supercross champion Heath Voss. The nearby Mico, Texas resident will make his first appearance in the AMA Arenacross Series, looking to mix up the standings a little more.
Advance tickets are available for this weekend’s San Antonio Arenacross at the Alamodome Box Office, Ticketmaster charge by phone and ticketmaster.com. Tickets cost $2 more the day of the race.
