About Team Shasta
Team Shasta was started by me, Shasta Johnson. I am breast cancer survivor who particpates in the Breast Cancer 3 Day walk not only for myself, but in honor of my sister Fiona Kooten Pay who lost the battle against breast cancer in 2005 at age 29.
I particpated in my first walk in October of 2005 with my friends Shaloe Nations and Cynthia Hunter. When I signed up for the walk it was in support of my sister Fiona, who was a survivor at the time. By October she had lost the battle and I was walking in her honor. That first year I walked 42 miles. For those of you who know me, that is a lot.
I was unable to walk in 2006. However, Shaloe and Cynthia continued the tradition and walked.
In March of 2007 I was diagnosed with cancer. I finished my last chemotherapy the Tuesday before the San Diego walk. I walked with Shaloe, Kimberly Lavendar and my husband Richard Johnson. I made maybe 25 miles total. Kim walked the entire 60 miles and my husband came very close.
In 2008 we all signed up again, adding Shaloe's husband Terry to the team. My mom flew out from South Dakota to join the team as a proud "walker stalker" with all my close friends and family. As our fundraiser we held an auction at the Final round of the Toyota AMA Pro Motocross Championship at Steel City. We auctioned off a limited edition Kawasaki KLX110 pit bike and other autographed memorabilia, raising over $10,000.00 for our walk team.
This year we decided to do something a little different. Team Shasta will be crewing at the Philadelpha Breast Cancer 3-Day. My husband and I will be on the sweep team and our teammate Pat Bonner will be helping in camp. Team Shasta will also be walking in the San Diego Breast Cancer 3-Day. Our fundraiser was once again held at the final round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at Steel City. However, we stepped it up a notch. The race served as a race to cure breast cancer with educational, awareness and fundraising elements. All the proceeds from the fundraiser will support Team Shasta in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Series.
