  • Unbound Energy’s Barcia, Metcalfe and Wharton Place Top Ten

CARLSBAD, Calif., – The Unbound Energy-backed GEICO Powersports/Honda team placed three of its racers in the top ten 250 class at Lakewood, Colo.’s Thunder Valley Raceway, with Justin Barcia (4th), Brett Metcalfe (7th) and Blake Wharton (8th) all making the top ten at the Lucas Oil AMA MX National series’ lone night race.

Also noteworthy is the fact that all four Unbound Energy-backed GEICO Powersports/Honda racers – including the injured Trey Canard – are all in the top ten 250 class overall standings. As of the fifth round Wharton’s in 5th with 144 points, Metcalfe 6th at 141, Canard 7th at 139 and Barcia 9th at 117.

At Lakewood Barcia was the fastest of all the Unbound Energy-backed GEICO Powersports/Honda racers. A rough start in the first moto had him outside the top 20 after the opening lap. But the rookie buckled down and tore into the world’s top 250 class competitors, working all the way back to 9th place by the end of the first moto. Wharton would put up the top effort in the opening moto, placing 4th while Metcalfe came in at 7th.

In the second moto Barcia got a far better start (2nd) and inherited the race lead when then leader Jake Weimer crashed. The young Honda pilot guided his CRF250R in 1st place for the next six laps before handing the lead back over to eventual race winner Weimer.

As Barcia made the podium in the second moto (2nd), Metcalfe brought it home with a top five (5th), while Wharton stumbled a bit to 11th.

Next up for Unbound Energy’s Barcia, Wharton, Metcalfe and Reardon is the sixth round of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA MX Nationals, the RedBud MX National in Buchanan, Mich. (July 4th).
