Concord, NC SMX Playoff 1SuperMotocross World Championship

With the SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX) Playoffs kicking off this weekend at zMAX Dragway, riders are in for a large payday, if they can stay consistent over the three rounds. Riders qualify (are seeded into the motos) by obtaining combined points throughout Monster Energy AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross Championship. When the playoffs start the points will be re-racked with the top seeded rider in each class credited with 25 points, second place 22 points and so on. Considering Jett Lawrence and Hunter Lawrence tied on points in the playoffs in 2024, with Jett winning because he had more wins (two wins to Hunter’s one), every point counts in this playoff format.

In the 250SMX class Haiden Deegan will obviously be lining up as top seed as he won both the 250SX West Division Supercross Championship as well as the 250 Pro Motocross title. In second is Jo Shimoda who moved up from seventh position after breaking a finger in supercross. Garrett Marchbanks had a similar move from eighth in points after supercross to third after the outdoors. Cole Davies (third in the 250SX West Championship behind Deegan and Julien Beaumer) missed all but the final two rounds of Pro Motocross after his injury at the supercross finale. So, Davies will enter the playoffs 17th.

One unlucky rider who did not move in either direction from the end of supercross (where he sat in 21st) to the end of motocross was Lux Turner. Sitting in 21st means Turner will be headed to the Wild Card race with the rest of the unseeded riders. However, with Chance Hymas, Mikkel Haarup, and Michael Mosiman out with injuries, and RJ Hampshire who sits in 20thracing the 450 class, this will open up four extra positions out of the Wild Card races. This means they should take six riders instead of two out of the Wild Card race.

Full Standings

In the 450SMX class consistency has paid off for Justin Cooper as he will head into the playoffs with 25 points. A podium guy indoors and out, Justin is the only top 450 guy to race every round in 2025 so far. Will his constancy pay off in the form of a million dollar check at the end? Cooper Webb, the 450 Supercross champion fell back to fourth in standings after he had to get surgery on his knee after RedBud. Similarly, Chase Sexton (who sat second after SX) fell all the way back to sixth. While Jett Lawrence who sat out the majority of supercross with his own knee injury jumped all the way up to second in points after only losing two rounds of Pro Motocross.

As mentioned, RJ Hampshire made his 450 debut for the Pro Motocross nationals and worked his way up to tenth in the standings. So, he is technically seeded for the playoffs in both classes but will be racing the 450. Ken Roczen will be back from his ankle injury, but Aaron Plessinger, Jason Anderson, and Colt Nichols will all be out for the playoffs leaving three extra spots for the Wild Card race (so five will qualify). Remember riders who are not in the top 20 must race the Wild Card race all three rounds.
