As the AMA Pro Motocross Championship zooms past the halfway mark, we figured it was a good time to dig into the projected qualifying positions for the SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX) Playoffs. When the final Pro Motocross checked flag waves in Maryland in late August, we will then tally together each rider’s total points from all 17 rounds of Monster Energy AMA Supercross and all 11 rounds of Pro Motocross to calculate the SMX standings for the playoffs.
Then, the riders first through 20th in combined SMX points are given points based on their positioning as they are guaranteed a spot in both motos for all three SMX Playoff rounds. Riders qualified 21st through 30th in the SMX standings will have to race through the LCQ at each playoff round in order to qualify for the motos. The LCQ riders will also all start the playoffs with zero points. Going to an LCQ in any race is less than ideal, especially for three rounds in a row like the SMX Playoffs format requires, so the guys right on the bubble will be hustling to make the 20th place cut-off. View the full SMX standings for both classes below.
Jett Lawrence barely took the 2024 450SMX title over his brother Hunter because he had the race wins tiebreaker. These qualifying positions matter as everyone is trying to take advantage by starting ahead on their competitors.
450SMX Standings
Cooper Webb had a two-point lead heading into the Pro Motocross opener. Webb led Chase Sexton by just two points, 365 points to 363 points. But then Sexton crashed at the opener and did not race until the RedBud National. Webb has run into a few issues this summer with his bike (Fox Raceway and RedBud) and then he twisted his knee at RedBud. Yamaha announced Webb will be out for the remaining five rounds of Pro Motocross as he will “undergo a minor procedure to have his knee cleaned up.” He will focus on his return in the SMX Playoff 1 round in his home state of North Carolina in September. Webb will likely drop several positions and enter in a deficit as opposed to having the three-point advantage.
Justin Cooper scored tenth overall at the Spring Creek National, his worst round so far this summer after a qualifying crash earlier in the day, but he still took over the 450SM qualifying standings. Cooper leaves the 24th round of the 31-round series now with a 12-point lead over Webb, a 69-point lead over Aaron Plessinger, a 90-point lead over Chase Sexton, and a 117-point lead over Malcolm Stewart. Cooper was over 80 points behind Webb when Pro Motocross started, so he made up a ton of ground.
Plessinger was likely going to close in on Webb, but he has had three straight motos without points. He had a DNS in moto two are RedBud, pulled off moto one at Spring Creek (39th officially) then another DNS in moto two. Plessinger had been having a strong summer until his tough last few motos as he has been dealing with an illness. Now he is out for the Washougal National as well.
Cooper’s points standings will increase, but no matter how much he leads by entering the playoffs, the top rider will only have a three-point advantage over P2 when the gates drop at zMAX Dragway in North Carolina in early September.
The key will be, where will Sexton, the Lawrence brothers, and Eli Tomac finish. Again, this could come out to be the deciding factor in who wins the whole thing in Las Vegas in two months' time. Sexton sits fourth at the moment behind the front Yamaha duo and his teammate Plessinger. Malcolm Stewart has been steady this summer and sits fifth ahead of Jett Lawrence, Hunter Lawrence, and Tomac. Joey Savatgy and Ken Roczen round out the top ten, with Roczen still recovering from his ankle injury in supercross. Justin Barcia, who recently returned to action at Southwick after a knee injury sidelined him for about two months, just passed Jason Anderson to take over 11th in the standings. Anderson has been dealing with ongoing health issues as well, although he has a 41-point gap on RJ Hampshire at the moment....except Kawasaki just announced Anderson is out for the remainder of the SMX season. This ends his 2025 season and effectively ends his time with Monster Energy Kawasaki. This opens up a position for other riders to move ahead of him in the remaining four rounds.
Dylan Ferrandis was 13th entering last weekend, but he was passed by Hampshire and Colt Nichols after their strong days in Minnesota. Jorge Prado, now 18th in 450SMX standings, was close to passing Ferrandis as he sits just two points down from the #14. Still, Ferrandis is within the cutoff for the guaranteed spot directly into the motos, as is Prado as he continues to navigate his first season in the U.S.
Beta teammates Mitchell Oldenburg and Benny Bloss sit 19th and 20th at the moment, ahead of Mitchell Harrison, Coty Schock, Valentin Guillod, and Benoit Paturel, the later three of which have been battling one another around tenth place in the motos this summer. This will be key to watch the next few weekends to see which riders land in the final few guaranteed spots and who is forced to the LCQ each playoff round. Christian Craig sits 28th at the moment, in an LCQ spot, but maybe with Webb out for the remaining four rounds of MX we see Craig race a round or two and try to jump up a few spots? That is pure speculation.
Guys like Harlan, Marshal Weltin, and Fredrik Noren have been sneaky good in SMX in the past. These guys want that extra money that SMX brings.

250SMX Standings
No surprise here as Haiden Deegan, who won the 250SX West Division Championship and lead the 250SMX standings at the end of supercross, continues to lead the field after a blazing start to Pro Motocross. His results took a hit at RedBud with 14-2 moto finishes but Deegan’s 32-point SMX lead entering Pro Motocross became 96 points following RedBud and now jumped to 103 points after Spring Creek. If things go the way they have this summer for the two-time 250SMX Champion, he will earn his second straight 250 Pro Motocross title and enter the playoffs with the #1 seed with ease.
Jo Shimoda, who was seventh in 250SMX points at the end of SX, has jumped to second in the standings in terms of 250SMX qualifying and the Pro Motocross Championship. Tom Vialle runs third as Garrett Marchbanks, and Michael Mosiman round out the top five in 250SMX standings. Look, those second two have been great this summer, but does the casual fan realize these guys are fourth and fifth in 250SMX, and fourth and seventh, respectively, in the Pro Motocross standings? Probably not! Props to both. Both are also fighting to earn a contract for next year. This strong summer is exactly what they need heading into new contract season. Plus, a strong finish in SMX would add some more cash to their pockets, too.
Vialle is now out for tomorrow's Washougal National, which could drop him a spot below Marchbanks!
Although not having raced since the High Point National, Chance Hymas sits eighth but his season is over after knee surgery, which opens up another LCQ transfer spot. Seth Hammaker (after his strong SX season that came up just short of the 250SX East Division title to Vialle) and Max Vohland are two more guys inside the top ten in separate rebuilding years. Both have been great this year, Hammaker mostly in SX but putting in some solid results in MX so far, and Vohland has been steady all year long, landing third in the Pittsburgh 250SX main event and scoring a handful of top ten moto finishes.
Jordon Smith is the top Triumph rider in tenth currently. Levi Kitchen sits 11th after missing most of SX after crashing out of the Daytona SX main event, ending his 250SX title fight just a few rounds in.
In just seven rounds of Pro Motocross, Mikkel Haarup has slotted into 13th at the moment, into a guaranteed spot for the motos in what has been an excellent debut season in the U.S. so far for the #107 machine. RJ Hampshire sits 14th in 250SMX, but he is full 450 now, so him not racing 250SMX will open up another transfer position, likely out of the LCQ like last year.
Cole Davies is back on the bike after his injuries at the SX finale and well in a qualifying spot at the moment, as is rookie Parker Ross, who has been good so far this summer, cracking into the top ten in the motos and overall. Austin Forkner is sitting in a direct transfer spot at the moment as well. Coty Schock sits 18th in 250SMX standings and 22nd in 450SMX standings but I believe he will be on a YZ450F in the playoffs, if all goes according to plan.
At the moment, Ryder DiFrancesco and Cullin Park are in the final two transfer spots as Drew Adams, Lux Turner, Dilan Schwartz, Ty Masterpool, Jalek Swoll, Avery Long, Max Anstie, and Daxton Bennick are a few top riders on the outside looking in. Just like the 450SMX Class, riders on, near, or within reach of that 20th place spot will be pushing extra late into the motos.
