  • Honda’s CRF RX/X Line Pushes Latest Motocross Performance Off-Road

Honda’s revamped CRF450R and CRF250R motocross line keeps grabbing attention on the racetrack—its record now including Jett Lawrence’s victory at the Charlotte SMX Playoff round in his first race on the new 2025 chassis. Honda has rolled out the same changes from the motocross line to the 2025 off-road racing bikes, the CRF250RX, and CRF450RX. Not all brands go all-out and immediately equip the off-road line with the latest tech from the motocross side, but Honda does not build these bikes to compromise. They build them to conquer.

What does that mean? Well, the CRF250RX and CRF450RX get the new frame from the motocross bikes, designed for more comfort and stability. The suspension is updated, and the engines benefit from a new airbox design with better flow, which means more power, plus the latest electronics. These new bikes have been well-received in our motocross tests, and the off-road group will, for example, appreciate the broader power delivery of the new 250. And while based on the new MX bikes, the two RX models have a list of special features designed specifically for off-road riding. These include 18-inch rear wheels, a bigger gas tank, hand guards and a kick stand. Back in the day, off-road racers in pursuit of the latest technology would often purchase motocross bikes and add these components themselves.; now you get to roll a true off-road racer straight off the showroom floor.

Make no mistake, the CRF250RX and CRF450RX are not “trail” bikes. They’re built for racing, in environments like the Progressive Grand National Cross Country Series, Enduros, Sprint Enduros, Hare Scrambles, desert races and more. These bikes are so serious that many will tell you they’re better all-arounders than the R models for a lot of riders, because while they’re still capable on a motocross track, they can also handle sweet singletrack or blast through the desert or dunes. Versatility is the hallmark of these machines.

If you have a more specific set of off-road needs, the Honda CRF450X returns for 2025. This bike is designed for long days in the saddle, as its enviable record in Baja will attest. It boasts an exclusive wide-ratio six-speed transmission with a lower first and a taller top gear than the close-ratio five-speed of the CRF450RX. The suspension and power delivery are smoother and more tractable, and the bike meets California’s green-sticker regulations. Plus, a full set of enduro lighting means the exploring doesn’t have to stop at sunset.

There’s one other thing these bikes all have in common: Honda’s reputation for quality and durability. That’s especially helpful when you’re hammering trails all day.
