Morning Report
We're already underway here in Massachusetts, because this is the first day race of the 2018 Monster Energy Supercross Championship. Track walk started at 6:30 a.m. and practice started at 8. The "night" show starts at 3 p.m. It was also 35 degrees this morning when track walk began. Yes, these are #firstworldproblems all the way. A few riders had to make special accommodations, though, such as Jason Anderson, who bunked in Zach Osborne’s motorhome for the night so he wouldn’t have to drive to the track this morning. We asked Anderson what time he will wake up in order to make 6:30 a.m. track walk. “6:30,” he said.
This track is going to be tough. After just one practice session, the track was already showing ruts all over the place, and one deep section of whoops had already gotten cupped out. This will be gnarly for the long main events tonight.
The one section of whoops even claimed Dean Wilson in the free practice, as he went down and looked to be holding an arm or wrist. He took a few minutes as a breather and then got back on the bike and continued the practice session. That was good to see. Christian Craig ended up with the top time in the 450 free practice session with Marvin Musquin second. The technicians could do well tonight, however, remember the first practice does not count for qualifying so others might step up once it counts.
As for the 250 session, Zach Osborne, Jeremy Martin and Jordon Smith got the top three spots, which is no surprise as they’re basically the three favorites in that class. Austin Forkner, by the way, is out with a collarbone injury. With Martin Davalos already out, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki team didn’t even come to the race this weekend! They’re probably happy to sleep in on this Saturday morning.
First Timed Sessions
Track is, again, gnarly, but it does appear the obstacles are rounded off a bit in order to, well, literally take the edge off. So far everything is still jumpable, but the whoops are definitely throwing some curve balls at the riders. The first section is short and steep, and because the riders approach it from a flat 90-degree turn, they can’t get a good drive into it. It’s tough. The second whoop section is really fast and the last three whoops have some kickers, and that will make it tough to get stopped and set for the 180-degree left at the end of it.
Jeremy Martin is becoming an unstoppable force in the 250s, as he led the first practice session of that group by a large margin. The 450 session was more competitive, with Eli Tomac leading the session for awhile, with Jason Anderson following him around. Then Marvin Musquin logged a fast time to go to the top of the board. Late in the session, Anderson took the top time and that held to the end.

Anderson, by the way, has a remote chance of locking up the 450SX Championship today if Musquin were to really falter. He has a 39—point lead and would have to have a 53-point gap at the end of this event to wrap that title. Basically, Anderson would have to win and Musquin would have to finish 11th or worse tonight for the championship to end.
Eli Tomac is third in points, 65 behind Anderson. He needs to gain 13 points on Anderson tonight or he is mathematically eliminated.

Final Practice Sessions
Jeremy Martin is on fire! He had the fastest time session in this session by an amazing 1.3 seconds. Martin commented on how slippery this track is—looks like they did a lot of work between sessions and cleaned up most of the ruts, but slippery is slippery, that part won’t change. Osborne and Smith rounded out the usual suspects in that session.

Eli Tomac set the fastest qualifying time in 450SX with a 52.536 in the second session. Marvin Musquin was second fastest followed by Weston Peick, Tyler Bowers, and Dean Wilson. Points leader Jason Anderson was just eighth fastest.
The practice was red flagged when privateer Ben LaMay endoed through the last few whoops and face planted in the berm. Luckily LaMay was able to get up under his own power and was carted off. His status for the night is not known at this time.

Zach Osborne grabbed the holehot in this one over Thomas Ramette, but Ramette ran off the track, opening the door for Sean Cantrell to get to second, but Ramette was able to hold the rookie at bay. The rest of the race was fairly routine, with Michael Mosiman and Luke Renzlan moving up to fourth and fifth, displacing Nick Gaines who had a good run going for sixth. The last lap featured a typical bonkers battle for the final transfer spot, as Ramyller Alves put in a huge charge through the whoops to get close to Cody Vanbuskirk. Alves aimed for the exit of the corner and they both collided and went down in a heap. Alves got up first to snag the final qualifying spot.

In 250 Heat 2, privateer Vann Martin, who made his first main event of the year last week, nailed a great started from the outside. Jeremy Martin was soon there to challenge him Martin quickly took the lead and checked out from there. Anthony Rodriguez moved up to second ahead of Jordon Smith and Brandon Hartranft, and he was able to hold them at bay. Kyle Peters, riding with an injured knee, was in a qualifying spot but crashed, and after finishing 10th he will have to go to the LCQ.

Jason Anderson grabbed the holeshot over Marvin Musquin in this one, and Anderson lit it up from there, distancing himself a bit from Musquin. In the second half of the race, Marvin started to close the gap and got back to Anderson’s rear wheel. Anderson held on to take the win, though.
In the battle for the final transfer spot, Carlen Gardner crashed while in qualifying position. This opened the door for Deven Raper to hold ninth, but in the last turn Dustin Pipes snuck inside and block passed him for the spot. Raper was smart enough to get on the brakes and tuck back underneath. He ended back ahead of Pipes to reclaim the final spot.
“Yeah the track is so tricky right now,” said Anderson. “Sometimes it’s tacky and sometimes it’s hard and slick. What’s hard is you try to set up the bike for the soft stuff, but then there’s a hard base in some spots that’s almost like west coast hardpack.”

Kyle Peters grabbed a much-needed holeshot and checked out, but Drayke Sizemore crashed while running second. Wilson Fleming, Cody Vanbuskirk and Tanner Basso moved to the top four. They held their positions to the end, which is justice being served since they were in qualifying spots in the heat and ended up crashing out.

Alex Ray didn’t even make it to his heat race due to bike problems. They got it fixed for this and he blasted out to a second place start behind AJ Catanzaro. He took the lead from The Cat and tried to get away, but Kyle Cunningham latched onto Ray’s rear fender. They battled for a bit until Cunningham made the move stick. Ray held on for second over Catanzaro. The battle for the final spot came down to Dakota Tedder, Dustin Pipes and Bubba Pauli. Pipes and Tedder went at it until Tedder went down in the sand turn. Pipes just managed to get by without getting tangled up. Pauli kept the pressure on to the end but Pipes held on to snag his first main of the year.

Zach Osborne grabbed the holeshot on his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna with the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull KTM teammates Sean Cantrell and Jordon Smith right behind. Jeremy Martin started just behind them, but he jumped into a tough block on the first lap and went down in a heap. By the time he dug himself out, the fastest qualifier was nearly a half a lap behind the field.
Smith kept the pressure on Osborne early, but a few minutes in Osborne found some good lines through the sand and through to the finish to start pulling away. Smith found his rhythm then and the gap stabilized, but Osborne was just far enough ahead to where he didn’t have to deal with any pressure.
Kyle Peters, racing after tearing his ACL and MCL last week in Minneapolis, rode solid in fourth and kept it close with Cantrell. Cantrell went down, and Peters found himself in a podium spot. Martin was coming, though, picking off riders in bunches, pulling clutch moves through downed riders, and threading the needle through traffic. At one point Martin landed a triple in a tiny gap between Brandon Hartranft and a tough block, but calmly landed it, hit neither, and grabbed a position. On the last lap Martin got Peters within his sights, trying to from last to third, but Peters hung tough for his first podium since finishing second in Indianapolis in 2013.
“I really didn’t think I’d be able to race, so this is just the greatest feeling in the world," said Peters of Autotrader.com/Yoshimura Suzuki. "So pumped for my team. This morning in practice and everything, it was a super struggle.”
"The track was absolutely brutal here,” said Smith, the runner up. “We’ve been struggling all day, we made a huge change before the main event and I think it was the right move for us.”

450 Main Event
Christian Craig has been struggling with his starts the last few races, but he nailed this one to put his factory HRC up front. The usual contenders like Marvin Musquin, Jason Anderson and Eli Tomac were right behind, and then Craig crashed just before the whoops near the end of the first lap. This gave Musquin the lead, while Tomac and Anderson scrapped for second for a bit. Anderson made some mistakes which let Tomac get away, with Vince Friese and Blake Baggett battling behind them for fourth and fifth.
Tomac made a run at Musquin just as Musquin got into lapped traffic. That was expected to be an advantage for Tomac, the second-place rider, but Marvin did a masterful job slicing through the pack, even logging his best lap of the race on lap 12 to reestablish his gap. Then Musquin hit another pack, and Kyle Cunningham went over the bars on a triple right in front of him. Somehow Musquin was able to sneak past. With two to go Tomac got back to Marvin and a huge battle began, and it didn’t take Tomac long to strike. His first opening he went outside before the whoops, got a huge drive down the whoops and took the lead! A few corners later, the white flag came out. Marvin was running out of time, but he found an inside rut on Tomac and drove it in way deep. They collided and Tomac went down, with Marvin getting away. Tomac got up stood there, and gave him a thumbs up. In case you didn’t realize, he was being sarcastic. Marvin rolled away to the win. Wow what a finish. Anderson was third.
“Just a bit of a cheap shot, you know?,” said Tomac. “I would understand if I did something before that, but I was clean. That was dirty.”
"We're racing for a 450 AMA Supercross win," said Musquin on Fox Network. "I saw a rut on the inside!"
Tomac wasn't happy and the crowd greeted Musquin with some boos, while Tomac received huge cheers on the podium.
Behind this came Baggett and Wilson in the top five.
