For the first time since Freestone in 2010 GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac holds the points lead in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. Following a 1-1 performance last weekend at the Peterson CAT Washougal National, Tomac closed the gap to within a point of series leader Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen. With Roczen out with a DNF following a hard crash early in the moto, Tomac took full advantage spoiling the homecoming party for MyPlash/Star Racing Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin.
It was GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn with another Motorcycle-Superstore.com holeshot with Martin, Roczen, Justin Bogle and Marvin Musquin in his rear view. Hahn’s lead was short lived as both Martin and Roczen made their way past the Kansas native. Meanwhile, Tomac was buried around fifteenth after lap one.
Martin had the home crowd on their feet as he garnered the lead—the first time he’s lead in his career. Roczen was pushing the pace behind, but a huge crash right before the sand whoops prematurely ended his charge. Roczen pulled off shortly after. He will try and ride the second moto.
Tomac pounced on the golden opportunity, charging all the way back from outside the top ten to challenge Martin for the lead. The rookie put in a valiant effort, but Tomac proved to be too much down the stretch. With his moto win, Tomac picked up 25 points on Roczen and now has a 24-point lead with seven motos to go. Martin would finish second, with Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson taking home third for his first career moto podium.
Justin Bogle, Blake Baggett, Justin Hill, Wil Hahn, Adam Cianciarulo and Darryn Durham would round out the top ten.
