The 250 Class has featured four different overall winners—Eli Tomac, Ken Roczen, Marvin Musquin and Blake Baggett—through five rounds, leaving many questions on the table for round six of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross from Southwick, Massachusetts.
Starts have killed Eli Tomac’s momentum this season, but Southwick told a much different story. Tomac’s GEICO Honda teammate Wil Hahn secured his third holeshot in as many races in moto 1, but a mechanical would lead to a DNF for Hahn will battling for a top five position. New England based privateer Jimmy Dectois, who is racing his first National following a brief stint in Europe, had the crowd on their feet as he rounded the first corner in second. Decotis would have bike problems late in the race leading to a 29th place finish.
Tomac made a quick dash to the front, getting by both Hahn and Decotis before the first lap reached its conclusion. It was all Eli Tomac from there, as even a late tip over didn’t hinder his run to the top. His win marked his first moto 1 win of the season and his second consecutive moto win (won Budds Creek moto 2).
With Tomac running away, points leader Ken Roczen was slicing through the pack, coming from outside the top ten to hook onto the fender of Blake Baggett for second late in the race. Roczen closed the gap to within less than a second, but a late mistake left him on the ground and off the pace of Baggett.
Baggett outlasted Roczen for second with Justin Bogle, Zach Osborne, Jason Anderson, Cooper Webb, Cole Seely, Adam Cianciarulo and Marvin Musquin (who came from outside the top twenty) rounding out the top ten.
