Del Moto Derby 2012
When one thinks of Del Mar, tucked gently along the Pacific in one of San Diego’s most beautiful regions, many thoughts come to mind: beaches, hot air balloons, luxurious mansions, the vastness of the fairgrounds, horse races, motocross….wait, what? A motocross race taking place on the same hallowed grounds where Sea Biscuit edged out Ligorati by a nose? The same place that millions visit every year for the annual San Diego County Fair, to enjoy fantastic concerts and food that many could not concieve of? Yes my friends, yes indeed.
From the beaches to the deserts and everywhere in between, Spy Optic is the definitive action sports eyewear brand, born and raised right here in San Diego county. When the idea of hosting our own motocross race sprouted, we answered the call with a resounding “YES!” When the opportunity came to place this race in one of the most historic and legendary venues in all of San Diego, our excitement became ecstatic.
Spy has a long and storied past in the Southern California motocross scene, with our inception being nurtured along by none other than the winningest Supercross racer of all time, Jeremy McGrath, who to this day remains a large part of the Spy family and will be on hand for all of the excitement at this inaugural event. Who knows, perhaps we can even get “The King” to throw a leg over a bike. Along with Jeremy, you can expect an all-star cast of Spy’s professional athletes, along with the brightest future stars of motocross in an all day moto derby that will surely add to Del Mar’s great racing legacy.
While the “big guns” of moto are sure to enthrall and amaze all in attendance with their skill, speed and flamboyance aboard their 250cc and 450cc machines, a burning desire will be lurking in the shadows of the Del Mar Arena. A desire to be the fastest, a desire to be the best, a desire….to win. An emotion so ferocious and strong, that it can only manifest in the minds and hearts of the next generation of incredibly talented motocross superstars. Write down their names and remember the numbers that adorn the plates of their 65cc and 85cc speed machines, these groms are the real deal and in short order are looking to take over the world, one race at a time.
In the spirit of a derby and the horse racing that Del Mar has long been known for, someone needs to go home with some winnings. For the fastest riders of the day, a $5,000 bounty has been placed on the uppermost spots of the podium. While this event will certainly not be an “everyone’s a winner” day, we should all do our part to make it so. To that end, the McGrath family will be on hand, supported by the good folks from Be The Match (bethematch.org) promoting a bone marrow donor drive, in an effort to battle and conquer leukemia, which affects nearly a quarter of a million Americans every year. The test only takes a few moments to administer and the possibility of saving another’s life is immeasurably great.
It’s all going down on Sunday, June 17th at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. All you will need to attend this fantastic beachside motocross experience is a ticket to the San Diego County Fair.
