A wild night for Monster Energy Supercross in Indianapolis ended with just one normal thing happening--Ryan Villopoto won the SX class main and further extended his points lead. Beyond that? Strange things, indeed.
Villopoto's main comp was expected to come from James Stewart, who won last week in Daytona. But Stewart crashed one turn into his heat race, and Kevin Windham had nowhere to go and plowed into him. Stewart was knocked out of competition for the night after hitting his head. Villopoto also crashed in his heat race, leaving Justin Brayton and Brett Metcalfe as surprise heat race winners. In the main, Brayton jumped out to the early lead while Villopoto started mid pack. At the halfway mark it looked like Brayton could score his first-ever SX Class win, but Villopoto tracked him down, made the pass and pulled away. Brayton and Davi Millsaps rounded out the podium.
In Lites, Justin Barcia's four-race win streak came to an end. He suffered a bad start in the main as well as a small crash, while Ken Roczen checked out up front. A red flag came out on lap five due to a Kyle Cunningham crash, and the race was, oddly, restarted with a single-file start with the riders parked on the start stretch, and then given the green flag.
Roczen pulled away again, but then crashed all by himself, handing the lead to Blake Wharton, who went on to take the win.
