Renegade Fuels Gopher Dunes Race Report
Kamloops, B.C. - After a three week break, the 2010 Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross Series resumed this past weekend with the Gopher Dunes round in Courtland, Ontario and the Leading Edge team looked to keep the momentum rolling after their double podium performance at the previous round in Morden, Manitoba.
Considered one of the roughest tracks on the circuit, the deep sand of the Gopher Dunes facility tests both man and machine to the limits. Showcasing the performance of their C4MX modified, Renegade Fuels SX4+ powered Kawasaki KX250F's, Spencer Knowles grabbed the first moto holeshot to keep the team's undefeated string of starts alive, with his teammates Shawn Rife and Teddy Maier coming around close behind. As he proceeded to pull away, the sand monster got the best of him and Knowles made a mistake and went down, setting up a battle for the lead between his teammates, Rife and Maier. Maier made the pass on his teammate for the lead and with only several laps left looked to have his fourth moto win of the season in the bag when the unfortunate happened – he stalled his bike. This allowed Rife through to take his third straight moto win and luckily Maier was able to re-fire his machine and salvage valuable points in the championship.
The stage was set for redemption in the second moto and Spencer Knowles was determined to prove that, just like at Morden, even a bad gate pick wasn't going to keep him from getting to the first turn first as he grabbed his second straight holeshot and ensured that Leading Edge and Renegade Fuels would remain undefeated in the start department in this 2010 season. As Knowles lead the pack again, his teammates were in their usual close proximity to the front. Maybe a bit too close as the Sand Monster reached up and bit Knowles once again, causing him to go down. Unfortunately, his teammate, Maier, was caught up in the wreck and was forced to remount at the back of the pack. The Iowa native wasn't about to give up though, and in a ride that showed that the champ wasn't about to give up on his dreams of defending his title, put on a valiant charge to ride his way all the way back up to fourth by the time the checkered flag flew. Meanwhile, first moto winner, Rife, was battling for the lead and hoping to make it a second straight clean sweep when he reinjured the foot he broke at the Edmonton round and was forced to retire from the race. He will have it evaluated this week and hopes to be able to return to action soon.
The first East Round at Gopher Dunes proved to be even more of a success for Orange Motorsports team as they made the move to the Renegade Fuels for the first time.
In moto 1, Jeremy Medaglia #17 prepped his gate and was ready to get some sand between his toes. He pulled off a mid pack start but worked his way up to 5th at the 15 minute mark. Once there, it was just a matter of time and his recognized ability to remain consistent and strong which would allow him move into 4th position. In the second moto it proved even better for the Orange Motorsports/KTM rider– Jeremy started beside the box and was ready to put his ktm out front. He managed to round the first corner in about 3rd position and worked up to 2nd quickly in the race. Jeremy rode a solid second throughout the moto with only milliseconds separating him from first. Overall for the day, Orange Motorsports/KTM rider Jeremy Medaglia #17 found himself on the podium in 2nd. Orange Motorsports/KTM team is now a solid 3rd in points. Congratulations!!!
Jeremy also had some company under the tent for the first eastern rounds. Orange Motorsports sponsored intermediate riders, Richard Grey #194 and Nathan Bles #29 (129) showed what they had to offer the sport of motorcross and its fans. They lined up against all the factory riders and were as calm as could be. Richard Grey #194 started the first moto in top 5 and Nathan #29 (129) inside top 10. Richard kept pace with the top riders and rode consistent and smooth to finish an amazing 5th! Nathan #29 (129) also rode consistently and strong for an inspirational 7th place finish.
In the second moto, Richard got around the first corner in 2nd and held this position for around 4 laps. Richard was able to keep himself inside the top five for 20 minutes of the moto; however, in the last few minutes, the sand caught him -as it sometimes does at the Dunes – and he lost a few positions. Being the collected person he is, Richard shook it off and rode over the finish line with an exceptional display of skill and ability. Nathan also had a solid start and was able to finish 10th with an overall of 6th – Pretty impressive for a pro debut.
