AMA Arenacross Heads to Louisville
AURORA, Ill. – With three stops down, the 2009 AMA Arenacross Series championship is taking shape and continues onward to Broadbent Arena in Louisville, Ky., January 23-25.
The world’s best arenacross competitors will take on the challenging, technical layout of the Broadbent Arena floor. Two classes chock full of talent will do battle for two exciting nights of action while the stars of the future hit the track on Sunday for amateur day. Families can come enjoy the excitement with Gold Level seating for just $25 with a child discount for ages 2-12.
Last weekend in Dayton, Ohio, the series completed its first one-race weekend of the 2009 season. With the new, condensed format this season, all the series’ competitors must be on the top of their game in order to stay in the championship hunt. Like he has all season, Mahindra Tractors/Tuf Honda’s Jeff Gibson rode to the front and grabbed his second win of 2009, extending his points lead.
“You can make a lot or you can lose a lot,” said Gibson, referring to the one-race weekends. “Fortunately, I made a lot.”
This weekend, the series returns to the two-race weekend format as Gibson and his toughest competitors invade Broadbent Arena for two nights of bar-to-bar action on Friday and Saturday.
Last year in Louisville, reigning AMA Arenacross class champion Chad Johnson swept both nights of racing en route to his second-career AMA Arenacross Series title. While Johnson has yet to stand atop the podium this season on his Babbitt’s Monster Energy Kawasaki, a repeat of last season’s performance at Broadbent Arena would undoubtedly turn his season around.
In the talented AMA Arenacross Lites class, the Midwestern and Central Divisions converge for a dual round. As a result, a lengthy list of hungry young riders will attack the track to provide memorable racing for the thousands in attendance. Central and Midwestern Division points leaders Bruce Dehn (Caswell Cycle Kawasaki) and Willy Browning (Spinechillers/Suzuki City) lead all challengers into the next round of their respective championships.
Last season in the Lites class, Tyler Bowers and Jimmy Albertson garnered first place honors in Louisville.
