Help Support Cody Gilmore
August 21, 2006, 6:30pm
SHELDON, IOWA (August 21, 2006) - It wasn't long ago that most of us were cheering Cody Gilmore on at events like the National Arenacross series, (where he was Rookie of the Year for the 04-05 Season), Loretta Lynn's, (250/Open B Stock Champion in 03'), as well as many national and local events alike. Today, racing has taken a backseat to an all together different battle that Cody now faces. Shortly after Loretta Lynn's this year, Cody was diagnosed with cancer. Cody started to have back pain that made it difficult for him to even stand or walk and eventually losing feeling to his legs all together.
Gilmore, 18, of Spencer, Iowa, is now in Rochester, Minnesota. He's receiving treatment at the well known and highly regarded, Mayo Clinic. He's gone through several surgeries already to try and remove some of the cancer that is in his back. He's walking with the assistance of a walker at this point and trying to regain full use of his legs. He will be starting chemotherapy today (August 21). I spoke with him twice over the weekend and he's very appreciative of all of the support, prayers, and well wishes that he's received and he said "thank you" to all of you that are thinking about him. He said that the cancer he has is normally found in pediatric cases so they have him in a children's section of the Mayo and he laughed as he told me about the "Disney" theme that he has going on in his room. He said that his doctors have told him that he's responding better than expected to his surgeries so far and he's remaining positive.
Dirt World Inc. and Sheldon Competition Park, in Sheldon, Iowa; will be holding a benefit race for Cody on Saturday night, September 2nd. There will be a guaranteed 150% + $750.00 per class payback in the 125 A and 250 A classes. A lot of A class riders that I have spoken with are going to donate part of their winnings back to the Gilmore family. There will also be an enlarged payout in the Open Outlaw and ATV classes as well. Furthermore, the Midwest Motocross Series will be donating $1.00 for every rider entry at this event. I would like to put together some product giveaways, as well as some raffles or auctions for any items that maybe donated to this cause. I have already received a good response from people willing to donate and help Cody in this trying time. Any help, donations, or ideas will be greatly appreciated. I'd like to note that Cody raced every race at our facility up until this year including last year's labor day event where he swept every moto. If my memory serves correctly, he never lost here. He will win this battle as well.
Any ideas, questions, donations, etc., can be sent through me via email or telephone. I can be reached by email at mxmugz@yahoo.com , or by phone at 712-324-4387 during the daytime hours. Thanks for your time.
