Moto 1 | MXGP | MX2
An incredible opening ceremonies wrapped up with a bang as fireworks exploded over Ironman Raceway. Qualifying was done and dusted, and, finally, it was time to go racing! Who has the best riders in the world? We will now figure that out!
In the first moto of the day with the MXGP and MX2 riders, it was Lucas Coenen credited with the holeshot with Australia’s Jett Lawrence running in second. Chaos ensued further back as Germany’s Simon Langenfelder went down in the first turn along with Australia’s Kyle Webster. Then further bad news for Germany as Ken Roczen went down in the second turn. Roczen would get up to finish the race while Langenfelder did not. The crowd gave Roczen a huge cheer when he came around in last, acknowledging his effort. That would continue throughout the race.
Out front, J. Lawrence got around L. Coenen by the end of the first lap, Tim Gajser, Romain Febvre, Isak Gifting, and Eli Tomac followed. Kyle Webster had his work cut out for him. He remounted his #2 machine and put in a charge as his teammate Lawrence out front started to get some breathing room. Febvre went down a handful of laps into the race, handing over a few positions to Gajser and Tomac. MX2 riders Sacha Coenen, Justin Cooper, and Kay de Wolf made their way forward. And Belgium had the early lead with the brothers running second and fifth.
Tomac was gaining on Gajser but the Slovenian was not giving up the position easily. Gajser managed to hold off Tomac at the checkered flag. A loud roar followed both Tomac and Cooper around the track as you could always tell where the #4 and #5 were on the circuit. The crowd also gave Roczen a huge cheer as he continued to race along. Febvre charged forward after his crash, battling Ruben Fernandez and Kay de Wolf as his French teammate Mathis Valin made his way into the top ten. On the final lap of the race, S. Coenen ran into trouble and was credited with 20th position, which moved Cooper up to tenth. S. Coenen had a high side crash that left his bike in the way of Cooper when he came around the track and landed directly on Coenen's #47 machine! That left S. Coenen stranded on the track without the ability to finish. He also reportedly suffered a wrist injury in the crash, which he will have to ride through to keep Belgium's hopes alive in the overall standings. With Glenn Coldenhoff (The Netherlands) DNSing after a big crash yesterday in his qualifying race, this is a tough blow for Beglium, one of the other top favorites this weekend. Heading into the second set of motos USA and France are tied with 14 points and Australia has 16.

Race 2 | Open | MX2
Two straight races...and two straight early leads for the Lawrence brothers! But once again, their Aussie teammate Kyle Webster went down in the first turn though! Jan Pancar from Slovenia and Valentine Guillod followed with Jo Shimoda behind them. RJ Hampshire started about seventh and quickly worked his way into the lead, while Justin Cooper started about mid-pack and came around 17th on the first lap. Both American riders were on a charge as Hampshire made his way around Shimoda and then into second place, while Cooper worked up to tenth.
No sooner did RJ get into second when he slid out coming out of a turn and fell back to fifth, gifting second to Shimoda. Out front Hunter Lawrence actually had two tip overs which allowed Shimoda to keep the race closer than it should have been. Meanwhile Hampshire worked his way up to right behind Pancar and then ran into the back of him right after the mechanics area going down a second time. He then had to make his way back around Liam Everts, who is riding the Open class this weekend.
Justin Cooper was running tenth a few positions back. Webster charged up to 13th, and he bettered his 15th from the first moto. Sacha Coenen went down early in the race and was dead last. We also heard he was dealing with a wrist injury following his crash at the end of the first moto. He was well into the top 25 halfway through the race and eventually finished 21st. Belgium's tough luck continues there.
With two laps to go, Hampshire had his third crash of the race! He dropped from fourth to seventh once again, which is where he would finish. Cooper would come through tenth. Guillod eventually finished 35th. Simon Längenfelder was a DNF for Team Germany.

Race 3 | MXGP | Open
Heading into race three it was France and USA tied for first with 14 points and Australia trailing with 16. Jo Shimoda pulled the holeshot with Lucas Coenen in second and Hunter Lawrence in third, though it did not take long for Hunter to move into the lead. Meanwhile Eli Tomac started around tenth, Jett Lawrence was back in 13th and Hampshire was 17th. Tomac, Lawrence and Hampshire all started making moves, but it would just unravel for Hampshire as he went down and then went down again damaging his bike and was unable to finish.
Lucas Coenen had a couple of fast laps up front where he seemed to be closing on Hunter Lawrence until he went down hard, ending up tenth in the moto without a rear fender. Tomac and Jett were still on the move, Tomac making his way into second and for much of the race was the fastest man on track. Jett, who started a little further back than Tomac had it much harder as both Tim Gajser and Romain Febvre seemed to have raced Jett harder than they raced anyone all weekend. Jett prevailed and eventually made his way into third.
The two riders who moved up to the 450 just for this race, Jo Shimoda and Liam Everts were impressive, proving they will be able to hang when it is time for them to move up. Shimoda finished sixth in the moto and Everts was seventh. Further back 40-year-old Antonio Cairoli, who was riding with a fracture in his wrist ended up 13th in the moto.
With Australia winning all three motos they took the easy overall win, but it was USA and France battling neck and neck, and every pass mattered. They ended up both getting 33 points after their throw away motos, but USA took second on the tie breaker. Hunter won the overall in Open, Jett won the MXGP class and Kay de Wolf was the overall winner of the MX2 class.
