When it comes to American motocross, the dream of racers from around the world to come here and compete is not limited to the male gender. With the return of the Women’s Motocross Championship (WMX) to the AMA Pro Motocross Championship schedule, racers from across the globe have set their sights on the series. This includes seven-time Australian women’s champion Charli Cannon.
After dominating the FIM Oceania Women’s Cup back in March, where Charli won all three motos and helped lead Team Australia to victory over the U.S. team in second, Charli started formulating plans to come to the U.S. for the 2025 WMX championship. Riding for the Quad Lock Honda Racing team made logistics somewhat easier as she would ride for the same team in the U.S. as she does in Australia. All was set for her American debut until disaster struck when she crashed and broke her index finger, which required surgery, just one week before round one at Fox Raceway.
With the WMX series only being six rounds, there is no time to sit out with injury. Weighing her options, Charli decided to come over anyways and try to score as many points as possible before the midsummer break where she could let her finger heal. It was a decision that paid off as she was able to go 4-3-2 in the first three rounds, and now sits in third overall, 18 points behind series leader Lachlan Turner.
Fans who were hoping to see a Cannon/Turner showdown hopefully won’t have to wait much longer with the fourth round at Ironman Raceway coming up next weekend. Meanwhile Turner will be competing at the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s this week. And Cannon has one round left of the Australian MXW series this coming weekend where she hopes to wrap up the title. She looks to be back on form having won the third round of the series last weekend in Toowoomba. With both riders healthy, the anticipation is building for Ironman to see who will come out on top.
