As I wrote earlier this morning, Chase Sexton is the only rider to hand Jett Lawrence an overall loss in the 450 Class of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship—and now he has done it twice. But this time it was straight up. Jett did not have a big crash that hindered him the rest of the day like he did at Hangtown last May. This time, the two battled, traded moto wins (Sexton in moto one then Lawrence in moto two), but Sexton’s 1-2 bested Lawrence’s 3-1 finishes for the win.
“That's why I lost, they jinxed me,” joked Jett Lawrence about the NBC broadcast covering his win percentages. “No, I knew Chase and Eli [Tomac] have been really good here, obviously I watched them in ‘22, and obviously ‘23, last time I was here Chase was on my ass the entire time, and fast. So, I knew this is my worst track of the circuit, and I just had to try and rely on my starts and I got a bit screwed in the first one by the Spanish mate…and then the second one I was able to kind of, wiggle my way back into the second, I was a bit slow on the jump.”
“It’s not an overall, but I'm still happy with second,” he continued. “I mean, Chase rides really well here, he was fast that first one. [I] Just kind of tried asking for too much and then once I got up, I tried getting into a flow again and I wasted like two laps then Eli was already gone, you know. And like, he was riding fast, so it was just trying to get that back, that flow, and try to pull [him] in and then I'd pull them in a bit, then we'd hit lappers gnarly. But yeah, I mean, I've had a really good run. I mean, you can't always win everything and winning always comes to an end at some stage, so, I'm still happy with a second and to be able to rebound for at least the second moto and get a race win.”
One thing to note is that while Lawrence has won seven overall rounds in the eight races so far this summer, he does seem to be crashing more than he had previously in 450 Pro Motocross. When Sexton was in front of him in the first moto, he slid the rear end out, ending his chances of tracking down the #4 machine. At RedBud when he went down in the second moto he was able to charge from about 18th to somehow still take the moto win. This time, on a tricky track he doesn't gel with, that was not the case.
Jett Lawrence's only two non-wins in 450 Pro Motocross to date. He has won the other 22 450 Pro Motocross races he has started...
| Position | Race | Class | Date | Bike |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Motocross Washougal | 450 | July 19, 2025 | Honda CRF450R |
| 12 | Motocross Hangtown Motocross Classic | 450 | June 1, 2024 | Honda CRF450R |
“Yeah, it's a pretty cool scenic track for sure, for photos and stuff like that, I think,” Lawrence said of Washougal MX Park. “I mean, I prefer a little bit deeper soil, I think with stuff where you can get a little more creative with bumps and stuff like that. But, yeah, I mean, it's still a fairly fun track like let's say you kind of struggle with the with the shadows and stuff like that, but you kind of squint your eyes and pray that there's not a hole there. But I don’t know, it was a fun track today. Obviously, the new step up was pretty fun. At least it wasn't that wall jump that you'd have to hit and just plonk down. No, it was still an all-around good day cause it's just different, different kind of racing with not having as many ruts.”
The Australian said the following in the post-race release from Honda:
“This has always been one of my tougher tracks, so I knew coming in it would be a challenge—especially with guys like Chase and Eli riding well here. In the first moto, I made a mistake and lost some time trying to get back into a flow, and by then Eli had already built a gap. I’m still happy with second overall, though; you can’t win everything, and eventually a streak ends. I was proud to rebound in the second moto and grab the win there.”
Lawrence will have two weekends off, in which he said he will be getting some golfing in, before the August 9 Ironman National. No question the #18 will come into the final three rounds fired up and ready for action.
