  • Savatgy, Wilson Battle for SX1 Overall in Wollongong in Australian Supercross

Yamaha off-road competition bikes are designed to turn enthusiasts into the best riders possible – to help them become one with their machine and win races – and to put them in the Victory Zone, atop the podium. From exciting youth models like the YZ65 and YZ85, to the legendary YZ125 or YZ250 two-strokes, and the championship-winning YZ250F and class-leading YZ450F with the industry-exclusive Power Tuner app, all Yamaha motocross bikes have one thing in common: winners choose them. After an electrifying start to the FOX Australian Supercross Championship with two action-packed rounds in Redcliffe, Queensland, the series made its way to the stunning coastal city of Wollongong, NSW, for Round 3. Set against the picturesque beach backdrop, the event unfolded at the iconic WIN Stadium, which hosted close to 12,000 eager fans, 60% of whom travelled from outside the region to witness the spectacle. Despite light rain adding extra moisture to the track, the ProTraxx team delivered an exceptional build that set the stage for an adrenaline-fueled night of racing.

SX1

With high stakes established in the opening rounds, tensions among contenders Joey Savatgy, Luke Clout, and defending champion Dean Wilson were palpable as they lined up in Wollongong. The 450cc class roared to life with Luke Clout capturing the holeshot, chased by Aussie Aaron Tanti. Dean Wilson surged into third with series leader Savatgy slipping to fourth after an early misstep. Wilson made an assertive pass to overtake Tanti and set his sights on Clout, who held strong for a hard-fought win in the first main event.

In the second race, Joey Savatgy found his stride, seizing the lead ahead of Wilson. Although Clout managed to climb into third, Savatgy demonstrated his skill with a decisive victory despite a late fall.

The final race saw Tanti take an early lead with Savatgy and Wilson close behind. Savatgy quickly powered to the front and, despite relentless pressure from Wilson in the closing laps, claimed the overall win. Wilson finished second overall, with Clout taking third to cap off an intense night of racing.

Despite an off-track moment in race one and a crash in race two, Savatgy’s relentless determination earned him the top spot and extended his points lead.

“It was tough tonight," said Savatgy in a team statement. "Going off track in race one hurt, and crashing in race two didn’t help, but I managed to remount and win. Race three was tricky with all the lapped traffic but another win gave me the overall. I’m happy with my riding, but we need to clean some things up."

Wilson put in a strong performance with three second-place finishes, earning him second overall, though he was visibly frustrated with the result. “I lost points on Joey tonight," Wilson said in a team statement. "It was a tough track to pass on, and there weren’t many areas where I could push harder. We’ve got two rounds left, and I need to be smart, but I can’t let Joey get away."

SX2

The SX2 class promised fireworks with its back-to-back race format. Shane McElrath, riding for Boost Mobile Honda, claimed the lead in the first race, securing victory over teammate Cole Thompson and Brodie Connolly, completing an all-Honda podium.

The second race saw McElrath once again in command until a red flag reset the action. After the restart, Thompson initially took the lead, but McElrath powered past to take another win. McElrath showcased his AMA Supercross experience, ultimately sweeping all three races for an unbeaten night.

“I’m thrilled with the bike and my riding; everything clicked tonight. I’ll stay focused as we head to Adelaide,” said McElrath.

Connolly, delighted with his first-ever second overall, overcame a crash during the evening. “I thought my night was over, but we bounced back. I’m pumped to get my first second overall. I just need to work on consistency,” Connolly shared.

SX3

Wollongong was all about local hero Ky Woods in the SX3 class. WBR Bulk Nutrients rider Seth Burchell, who dominated the previous rounds, faced fierce competition as Cooper Rowe grabbed the initial lead. Woods soon took control, with Jake Cannon in pursuit. Cannon's late crash allowed Koby Hantis and Jack Byrne to clinch podium spots, with Burchell rounding out the top five.

CR22 85cc Cup

Seth Thomas showcased his prowess by taking the lead from the start, holding off hometown favourite Jack Nunn and Richie Lawler. Thomas secured the win, with Nunn and Lawler rounding out the top three.

YZ65 Cup

The Yamaha YZ65 Cup made its 2024 debut in Wollongong, showcasing young talent on their two-stroke machines. Maxi Harris claimed victory, with Caiden Riley in second and Ryder Burchell securing third.
