The first two rounds of the Fox Australian Supercross Championship took place over the weekend in Kayo Stadium in Queensland, Australia. The five-round series kicked off with some big names from around the world, including U.S.-based riders Dean Wilson (SX1), Joey Savatgy (SX1), and Shane McElrath (SX2), plus riders such as Canadian Cole Thompson (SX2), Australians Jed Beaton (SX1), Luke Clout (SX1), Hayden Mellross (SX1), Matt Moss (SX1), Bett Metcalfe (SX1), and more. Wilson returned as reigning champion, with a big #1 with red backgrounds on his Honda CRF450R. According to the series, 17,000 total fans attended the races over the two nights.
SX1 Weekend Recap
On the first night on Friday night, Wilson took the overall win with 1-1 finishes as Savatgy and Clout rounded out the overall podium. Tanti and Mellross rounded out the overall top five.
“It was a great way to kick off the 2024 championship,” Wilson said in a team release from Honda. “My bike and team are working perfectly, and I felt confident out there. I need to be mindful of my teammate, but overall, I’m happy with my performance.”
“Three days on the bike, including today, and I already feel good,” said Savatgy, who is new to the Honda team. The bike is excellent, and we’ve got a great team. It's still a work in progress, but I didn’t want to push too hard, and Dean was quicker in certain sections.”
On Saturday night, Savatgy took the overall win as Clout (second) and Wilson (third) finished on the podium as Beaton and Dylan Wills (GasGas) rounded out the top five.
“The track was tricky, with few areas to make up time,” Savatgy said afterwards. “The key tonight was minimizing mistakes. I’m pumped with the team and the bike—we’ve had two days of testing, and the positive changes we’ve made are paying off.”
“Joey and I set the pace, and Clouty rode well, but tonight was about avoiding mistakes—and I think I made the most,” Wilson said. “Still, we’re in a great spot, and this championship is going to be tight.”
SX2 Weekend Recap
On Friday night, Noah Ferguson (Honda) took the overall win over Reid Taylor (Kawasaki) and Ryder Kingsford (Yamaha), as Jayce Cosford (Yamaha) and Brodie Connolly (Honda) rounded out the top five. The talking point of the night was the three-rider collision between Ferguson, Thompson, and McElrath.
“Noah rode brilliantly, and all of the guys showed great speed,” said team owner Yarrive Konsky. “But you can’t win races lying on the ground. The collision between three of our own riders is unacceptable, and we’ve addressed it. It won’t happen again.”
On Saturday night, McElrath took the overall win with 1-1 finishes over Thompson and Alex Larwood (Honda) as Brodie Connolly (Honda) and Rhys Budds (Husqvarna) rounded out the top five.
“What a great second night!” said McElrath. “We’re just two points off the championship lead, which is amazing given my first-round struggles. I can’t thank the team enough—we’ve made continuous improvements, and it really showed tonight.”
“This weekend was intense—everyone is fast, but we need to cut down on mistakes and make sure the riders are as comfortable as possible,” said Konsky. “I’m incredibly proud of the team, especially with what they’ve achieved with Joey and Shane in just a few days on the new 2025 450 and 250. This weekend’s success is a testament to their commitment.”
