Chase Sexton Suffers DNF in First Moto of SMX Finale After Racing Incident - Out for Moto 2
Everyone was anticipating a great, three-way, winner-takes-all battle between championship leader Hunter Lawrence, Chase Sexton, and Jett Lawrence at today’s SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX) Final. Las Vegas, Nevada, is hosting the down-to-the-wire SMX finale.
Unfortunately, in the first moto, Chase Sexton was landed on by Justin Barcia on the first lap around the back half of the top ten. We all know how Barcia races, but Sexton cut over to the right and Barcia had nowhere to go, landing directly on the top of the Red Bull KTM rider. This was clearly a racing incident as it happened to be a wrong place, wrong time and you know Barcia would not want to make an impact on this SMX championship in a negative way. Neither of the two went down, but Sexton’s visor was knocked off, his right shoulder of his jersey was all ripped up, and he looked banged up. He did one full lap before pulling into the mechanics area, picking up his mechanic Kyle Defoe and the two rode off to the pits.
The team told TV pit report Will Christien the bike was too banged up for Sexton to finish the moto. Note that the TV broadcast did pick up clips of Defoe starting to work on Sexton's bike, which could mean we will see him race the second moto.
Sexton's crash and 21st place finish will essentially make the three-way SMX title battle into now a battle between just brothers Hunter and Jett Lawrence.
Huge problems for Sexton! 🤯

Remember, Sexton is supposed to be Team USA’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations MXGP rider. Earlier this week, Honda HRC Progressive announced Chance Hymas was out as the MX2 rider as he needs to undergo knee surgery to fix a torn ACL. Yamaha allowed Cooper Webb to step up and fill-in for Team USA on a Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing YZ250F.
We will provide more information on Sexton when we can.
Update: 11:25 p.m. Eastern
Our Aaron Hansel checked in with the Red Bull KTM team after the first moto and they said Sexton will not be racing the second moto as his right hand is banged up. The #4's day, and chances of the 2024 450SMX title are now over.
Red Bull KTM's Ian Harrison said the following to the TV broadcast crew:
"Chase Sexton will not be racing this final race. He was landed on and he hurt his right hand. ...It's just disappointing to make it all this way, 31 races, and not be able to finish it out."
Harrison said Sexton will need X-rays to determine the extent of the damage. Again, how will this impact his status for the MXoN event?
KTM said the following on Sexton in its post-race KTM press release:
After entering the SMX Final in contention for the 450SMX title, reigning AMA Pro Motocross 450MX Champion Chase Sexton's chances unfortunately ended prematurely on the opening lap of Moto 1 tonight. The Red Bull KTM rider came together with another rider and injured his right hand, which ruled him out for the remainder of the evening.
