Riding a KTM 380 he called "the big girl," Australian off-road star Shane Watts won the Ironman GNCC. It was the sixth different model of KTM that the versatile Watts rode in the 2000 AMA/Wiseco Grand National Cross Country Series while on his way to the title. Finishing second to Watts was British import Paul Edmondson, who had clinched the 2000 AMA National Hare Scrambles title the week before. ATV crossover rider Barry Hawk Jr. was an impressive third overall.
1972
At the Orlando Sports Stadium sand track in Florida, Sweden's Ake Jonsson kept his Trans-AMA winning streak going with a third straight win. Husqvarna's Heikki Mikkola and his teammate Arne Kring of Sweden followed the Maico of Jonsson in the overall tally. The top American was sixth-place Brad Lackey aboard his Kawasaki.
1978
Bob Hannah posted 2-1 moto scores to win his fourth Trans-AMA race in five starts in the '78 series. Hannah followed Team Honda's Marty Tripes across the finish line in the first moto but seemed to run out of energy in the second moto. His 1-10 was still good for second overall, with Suzuki's Kent Howerton third with 8-2 scores.
Kawasaki privateer Mickey Boone topped the 250cc Support class ahead of Honda riders Warren Reid and Steve Wise.
