Tyler Hoeft: 2000 - 2015

We at Racer X are shocked and saddened to learn that amateur racer Tyler Hoeft has passed away due to head injuries sustained in a crash at last week's JS7 Spring Classic at Freestone in Wortham, Texas. We originally learned of Tyler's crash as we were publishing Racerhead on Friday, but additional information has been released via KTLA 5 News in California, local to the Hoeft family. There's also an article on page 40 of this week's Cycle News, which explains: “After showing very little sign of brain activity, the Hoeft family made the gut wrenching decision to take off life support.” He passed away late Friday, and his family spoke to KTLA on Monday.

From KTLA:

As the son of top professional supercross rider, Tyler and his 17-year-old brother grew up around the sport, and both had been riding nearly as long as they could walk, according to the family.

“We grew up riding actually around the house since we were 4 years old,” Justin said. “That’s all we did after school, we’d come home and ride until dark.”

Tyler’s family said the teen pursued his passion despite the risks of the sport.

“It’s a dangerous sport. Everybody know that when you swing your leg over it, it could happen,” Hoeft said. “It happened.”

Still, his father added that Tyler loved motorcross, and that he did not regret his son’s involvement with it.

“He was doing what he loved,” Hoeft said.

You can read the entire story here.

We'll update this story as we learn more. In addition, a GoFundMe page has been set up in Tyler's name. You can donate here.

Godspeed, Tyler.
