450 Main Event
For the first time in his career, Red Bull KTM's Ryan Dungey took his third-straight 450SX win. He trailed tonight's holeshot artist, Andrew Short, off the start and quickly passed into the lead during the opening lap. Dungey led all 20 laps almost uncontested. Almost.
GECIO Honda's Eli Tomac crashed on the second lap and dropped a lap down. He gathered himself late in the race and applied pressure to Dungey in a pseudo battle for the lead. Dungey doubled a triple and finally let Tomac by on the last lap to avoid any unnecessary run-ins.
Cole Seely nabbed second place in his first podium ride since Anaheim 3. This is the factory Honda rider's second-straight Indianapolis 450SX podium--he moonlighted in the premier class last year for the team.
Seely's teammate Trey Canard was buried in the midst of the pack off the start and worked his way past Weston Peick to claim third place. It would've been Peick's first professional career podium had he held onto the position.
Jason Anderson and Blake Baggett didn't have a night to remember. The two got into it early in the day and the trouble continued--though in separate incidents--late into the night. Anderson went down on two occasions, and Baggett crashed after the whoops and was momentarily trapped under his Suzuki. -Jordan Roberts
250 Main Event
Marvin Musquin is officially on fire. Another runaway win has given the Frenchman third straight win and fourth of five. Justin Bogle looked like he was going to stay close, but made some mistakes and was twenty-two seconds back at the checkers.
Martin Davalos grabbed the early lead but went down hard in the whoops after getting passed by Musquin. He later went down in the rhythm section as well and finished fifteenth.
Joey Savatgy was looking for his second podium of the season, first since the opener, and was running in third but appeared to have a bike problem and DNFd.
The GEICO Honda rookie duo of RJ Hampshire and Jordon Smith were brilliant tonight and finished off a GEICO 2-3-4 finish. It was Hampshire’s first career podium. It was also a career-high for Smith.
Kyle Cunningham had his best finish of the season in fifth, while Jimmy Decotis was strong for the third straight week in sixth. Kyle Peters finished seventh for the second time in as many weeks, while rookie Colt Nichols finished inside the top ten for the first time in his career. Vince Friese would finish ninth, while Jace Owen rode to his first career top ten in tenth.
450SX LCQ
You have to feel for Alex Ray after that LCQ. The privateer, looking for his first main event of the season, was leading the main before his bike blew up leading to a DNF. Nick Wey would inherit the lead and run away from Tony Archer and Ben LaMay. Dustin Pipes finished fourth for his first main event of the season.
450SX Semi 2
Josh Grant outlasted Broc Tickle for the Semi 2 win. The big story was Jason Anderson coming from way back to pass Alex Ray in the final turn for the final transfer spot. Anderson dove to the inside and pushed Ray wide to secure the last spot.
450SX Semi 1
Blake Baggett ran away with 450 Semi 1. After battling for the holeshot with Heath Harrison, Baggett pull away for a nearly thirteen second win. Kyle Partridge, Kyle Chisholm, Phil Nicoletti and Adam Enticknap would also transfer. This is the first main event of the year for Enticknap.
250SX LCQ
It has to feel like déjà vu for Jeremy Martin. For the fourth time in his three year career, Martin has failed to qualifier for the main event. Martin got a great start in the LCQ and was on his way to qualifying before the red flag came out for Luke Vonlinger. On the restart, Martin was buried deep in the pack. He worked his way up front but crashed in the whoops ending his changes at qualifying. Luke Renzland won the LCQ over Nick Gaines, Jace Owen and Daniel Herrlein.
450SX Heat 2
Is Andrew Short the new Mike Alessi? In 450SX Heat 2, Short pulled his 1,000th consecutive holeshot and led Eli Tomac in the early goings. Tomac, and then Davi Millsaps, would eventually pass Short but he was able to transfer in third. Ryan Dungey made a late pass stick on Broc Tickle to get the final transfer spot.
450SX Heat 1
Weston Peick’s recent hot streak continued in the first 450 heat race. Peick powered past early leader Jake Weimer and never looked by on his way to the win. Trey Canard went down in the first turn and could only work back to fifth. He will have to go to the semi. Jason Anderson got a little aggressive with Weimer late in the race, sending both riders to the ground. Weimer would rebound to finish fourth.
250SX Heat 2
It was business as usual for Marvin Musquin in Indy. Marvin quickly got out front after a tough start to catch early leaders Kyle Peters and RJ Hampshire. Musquin would stretch his lead to nearly ten seconds at race end. Jeremy Martin, second in points, failed to qualify for the main after a hard block pass by Taylor Potter on the last lap.
250SX Heat 1
The first heat race of the night belonged to one rider and one rider only—Justin Bogle. The GEICO Honda rider got the holeshot and ran away from the field. Joey Savatgy made up some ground late, but was three seconds back at race end. Martin Davalos was third.
Second Practices
450SX
If practice is any indication, we may have a barnburner in Indy tonight. The top six in the second session were separated by less than a second. Trey Canard, busted helmet and all, came back from an early session crash to take second with a 51.391. Cole Seely was the fastest for a lot of the session, but ended up fourth overall with a 51.845. Eli Tomac completed the Honda semi-sweep (three of top four) with a 51.372. The track was very rutted by the end of the session. Keep an eye on this going forward.
In injury news, Jimmy Albertson is sidelined tonight after crashing in practice and hurting his shoulder. Full times are below.
250SX
A sticky, rutted track greeted riders in the second 250 practice. “The track is going to breakdown,” said Justin Bogle following the session. Marvin Musquin was the fastest again, but it wasn’t easy. Justin Bogle and Joey Savatgy each took turns leading before Musquin flew in at the end to claim the top spot with a 51.569. Most of the chatter is about the track, which should be very rutted by tonight. In other news, Vicki Golden came up two spots she of qualifying for her first career night show. Golden looked much, much better than previous rounds and was just a few ticks off qualifying with a 59.904. Logan Pfleiderer qualified fortieth with a 59.844. Check out full times below.
First Practices
250SX
Oh, boy, this could be a long night for the rest of the 250SX field. Marvin Musquin, winner of three races already this year, was nearly a full second faster in the first 250 session. The track is very technical, which should only give him more comfort and confidence going into tonight. Joey Savatgy (53.149) and Justin Bogle (53.738) were the only riders to dip into the 53’s, other than Musquin who blasted a 52.225 in the first session. The whoops were causing some problems in the first session, which is something to watch going forward.
450SX
Who said there is nothing on the line this weekend? The first 450 timed practice brought a lot of noise. Blake Baggett and Jason Anderson collided while exiting a turn—Baggett cut down pretty hard on Anderson—and both appeared to be sent home from practice by the official. We will try and get more information on what exactly happened. Ryan Dungey held the top time before a red flag came out for Jimmy Albertson. It appeared Albertson’s shoulder popped out after a crash. Eli Tomac snuck in one the last lap to capture the best time over Dungey.
Update: It appears that Jason Anderson bumped Blake Baggett on the restart after the red flag, which lead to officials taking both off the track.
Morning Report
Welcome Lucas Oil Stadium home of the Indianapolis Colts and Round 11 of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship. Slowly but surely we are making our way through the grueling seventeen round schedule. Entering this weekend there is no team hotter than Red Bull KTM. In 250SX, Marvin Musquin has won three of four and holds a twelve point lead over Jeremy Martin. The track at Indy is fairly technical and should suit the Frenchman tonight. In 450SX, Ryan Dungey has also won three of four and is firmly in control of the championship.
In injury news, Ken Roczen is out at least three weeks after aggravating an ankle injury last weekend. Mike Alessi is also out tonight after a bad crash in the main event at Daytona. In 250SX, Matt Lemoine and Arnaud Tonus will both miss the race tonight. Untimed practice is underway, check back later for a full practice report.
