Last night we ventured over to the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds in Southern California to check out a different kind of racing. What we found (and shot with an iPhone) was a really cool racing program with a loyal following. It also seems to be gaining some new traction.
Costa Mesa Speedway has been around for nearly fifty years, and like every other form of motorsports racing, it’s had its ups and downs. Stars like Bruce Penhall, the Bast brothers, “Sudden” Sam Ermolenko, Greg Hancock, and Billy Hamill cut their teeth at Costa Mesa, which the Oxley family has run since 1969. The place is just flowing with nostalgia, and the crowd was really into the racing—especially when some of the younger stars like Courtney Crone and Sebastian Palmese were out there sliding around. The races are fast and short and the bikes exotic (#NoBrakes) but the racing was awesome.
Lots of industry friends were in the grandstands enjoying the speedway races, and more will be back for the May 31 Harley Night races, which include an open event for anyone wanting to get out there on their choppers!
