Motosport.com/TiLube Race Report: San Diego
RIVERSIDE, CA -. A full house of 58,782 came out to Qualcomm Stadium for the last California round of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series. Once again, they saw some of the best racing in years.
The duo of Nick Wey and fill-in rider Justin Sipes qualified 18th and 23rd, respectively under the perfect weather conditions in San Diego.
With Wey in the first heat and Sipes in the second, the teammates avoided competing against each other in the heat races for the second straight week. Wey rode a solid heat race and qualified directly to evening’s main event. Heat race two saw Sipes within qualifying position multiple times, however a late race crash with another rider resulted in a trip to the Last Chance Qualifier. Sipes got a great start and was leading the final qualifying race until an aggressive pass by Jake Weimer knocked him to the ground, abruptly ending his night.
“I raced as hard I could and never expected Weimer to come in and take me out like he did,” said a disappointed Sipes. “We were both in qualifying position so an aggressive pass like that wasn’t really necessary. But what’s done is done and next weekend I will be sure to not give an inch to anyone.”
Wey lined up for the main event looking to improve on his season’s best result of 13th. As the pack of 20 riders charged into the first turn, Wey was pushed to the far outside and shuffled toward the back of the pack. Determined to work his way forward, he focused on stringing together fast and consistent laps on the technical San Diego track. At the halfway mark he was in 11th and looking good for a top-10 finish. Going into the 19th lap, he was still going strong and looking to capitalize on anyone’s mistakes. A mistake by Kevin Windham came in the tricky whoop section, allowing Wey to slip by and finish 10th!
“Overall this weekend went well,” said Wey following the race. “My starts weren’t great but I was able to find some fast lines and work my way through the pack. I am going to work on a few things this week and try to improve on this result. It’s definitely a step in the right direction.”
Next week the series travels to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Tex. for the seventh round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series.
