Gaylord, MI– Known as one of Michigan’s premiere Ski and Golf destinations, as well as the winter training grounds for National Olympic Snowboard Halfpipe teams from around the world, the Otsego Club and Resort in Gaylord, Michigan prepares to host the 3rd Annual Great Lakes Grand Prix of Motocross on October 1st and 2nd, 2011.The Great Lakes Grand Prix is a motocross event unlike any other. The 3.5 mile track meanders through an eleven-hundred (1,100) acre ski resort property, providing an array of natural terrain and obstacles, as well as one of the largest elevation changes in Northern Michigan.
“When we built the first Great Lakes Grand Prix track three years ago, we knew it was going to be something special” says Jason Biber of Osprey S.A. Ltd. (parent company of the Otsego Club). “There’s no other feeling like shifting into 5th gear and holding your four-fifty wide freakin’ open on an uphill section that stretches nearly half of a mile long!”
Biber continued to say that while the track design has changed from year to year, the massive uphill section has remained a cornerstone of the event—thanks to its overwhelming popularity among riders and spectators alike. Other popular track features include its many vantage points for watching the races. For the event’s $5,000 Pro Am, the resort’s Main Lodge will surely host some of the weekend’s best spectating, overlooking large portions of the track, along with the Red Bull River Cabin in the Sturgeon River Valley below. Other fun classes that Biber pronounced as fan favorites include the Clydesdale and Thoroughbred classes, which are exclusive to riders who “carry a little extra junk in the trunk”, exclaimed Biber.
Aside from the racing, the weekend event also offers up a variety of special amenities not common with most motocross races; accommodating racers and fans with nearly 120 rooms, as well as log cabins, townhomes, and chalets on property. Steps away from Otsego Club’s various lodging options are a healthy blend of fine dining, bars, and lounge areas open day and night, along with Friday and Saturday night entertainment and live music from local favorites like Exit 282.
Racers and guests can also look forward to other fun events as part of the weekend’s itinerary including: Mandingo Pickle Pit Bike races, outdoor Water-Baloon Bomb, the O-Park mini skate bowl, and an FMF sponsored Team Dodgeball Tournament, with the winning team taking home $300 cash.
