Marmont Makes it Four MX Nationals Titles in a Row
August 1, 2011, 2:45pm
CDR Rockstar Energy Drink Yamaha’s Jay Marmont captured a dramatic fourth consecutive Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals, Australian Motocross Championship, on Sunday at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast.
The Wollongong resident entered the weekend 18 points in arrears of teammate Josh Coppins after a stunning second half of the season, and victory at Coolum Pines Motocross Park was enough for him to clinch title number four in a row.
Marmont won the opening race of the day in dominant fashion from the outset, before second place in moto two behind Coppins after slicing through the field had them stationary on 18 points apart.
The penultimate moto of the season was when the title turned around for Marmont, racing to victory while Coppins was involved in a first turn crash that saw the New Zealander suffer a dislocated shoulder. With Coppins ruled out, Marmont was crowned the champion with one race to spare.
“What a day, not in my wildest dreams did I think that this was going to happen,” the 28-year-old said. “I just tried win out there today, got the points I needed to for the championship and I’m just so happy to be here.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet, but I do have the same butterflies that I had when I won my first one in 2008. Crazy things have happened this year, everybody’s had their bad luck, but that is racing and exactly why we all do it and why we love it.
“I couldn’t have done this without CDR Rockstar Energy Yamaha, all of my sponsors and massive group of supporters. I also want to say congratulations to Josh and the other guys on a great season, I look forward to coming back and battling for number five.”
Marmont’s eventual winning margin in the championship was 32 points, picking up nine individual moto wins and taking out three of the final four overall round wins on his way to the title.
This weekend will see Marmont return to action at the King of the Cross race meeting in Western Australia on 6-7 August, a prestigious one-off event that he won last year.
