National Racing Returns to Historic Lake Sugar Tree MX
Lake Sugar Tree MX Park located in beautiful Axton, Virginia is still owned by the Bailey motocross family, currently by Bob Bailey, and is the track that champion David Bailey grew up on. MX Nationals were held at Lake Sugar Tree from 1986 to 1991 and in the 1970’s Trans-Am events were held there as well.
The weekend’s events kick off Friday, May 27th and continue through Sunday, May 29th.
On Friday, the Professor of Motocross, Gary Bailey will teach a Vintage motocross school for riders racing vintage and post-vintage bikes. The class is from 10 to 5 and is limited to 20 students. To sign up email gbmx@kimbanet.com.On Friday afternoon there will be corn-hole tournament and a fishing tournament. Be sure to bring your fishing pole so that you can take part in the first ever fishing tournament to be held at the lake in the center of the motocross track. There will be a special prize awarded to anyone who manages to fish motorcycle parts, gear or even a lost rider out of the lake. Rumor has it that more than one rider has ended up in the lake by over-launching the famous step-down, but reportedly all are accounted for.
Saturday will be packed full of vintage motocross racing on a special vintage track. The track is spectator friendly with full bathroom facilities, restaurant-style concessions and acres of grassy hills overlooking the track.
On Saturday night, the Baileys will host a Bar-b-que dinner and open house at their motocross museum next door for the riders. Riders and their guests will have an opportunity to tour the museum, view rare and original motocross footage on a big screen, and spend the evening relieving good times from back in the day.
Post-vintage racing and an awards ceremony will wind up the event-filled weekend on Sunday.
