Moates Cup Legacy Continues

Glen Helen Raceway, CA - Last year marked the return of the United States Grand Prix to the FIM Motocross World Championship schedule. Not only was GP racing back in the U.S., but it happened to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Marty Moates becoming the first American to ever win the 500cc USGP at Carlsbad. To commemorate these historic happenings, the "Moates Cup" was created and with the help of sponsor Lucas Oil, $5,000 was presented to the top finishing American. Now Lucas is stepping up again this year with another big check for the Top American at the USGP.
Young Zach Osborne won the inaugural Marty Moates Cup last Memorial Day weekend and he comes into Glen Helen determined to retain his title... and keep the cup! A GP regular, Osborne just won the second round of the Maxxis British MX Championship as a tune-up for the USGP and the Bike It Cosworth Yamaha rider looks to be in a position to keep "his" trophy.
The Moates Cup trophy is historic in its own right: It was donated by Ricky Johnson, the last American to win the USGP at Carlsbad in 1986. "The big check was nice, but winning RJ's trophy on the anniversary of Marty Moates 1980 USGP win was really something that I'm proud of," says Zach. "I really want to win it again!"
"What started as a little tribute to our friend Marty became a happening unto itself," says Cup co-founder Scott Cox. "Everyone was on board with remembering Marty Moates' legacy. Special thanks to title sponsor Lucas Oil for sweetening the deal with $10,000 in two years."
"Lucas Oil is proud to have helped establish this prestigious award for American GP riders," commented Bob Patison, Executive Vice President of Lucas Oil Products. "We have a strong affinity for international racing and want the U.S. riders to know we are behind them back home."
"What better testament to Marty's win 30 years ago than presenting the Moates Cup to Zach," asks Cup co-founder Todd Huffman. In addition to helping come up with Cup concept, Huffman produced "The Carlsbad USGP: 1980" which chronicles that magical day for Moates at the USGP. "I think the Moates Cup is a fitting tribute to Marty as America's first Carlsbad 500cc USGP hero and I'm hoping that the award and the movie help to rekindle that same type of magic again this year."
