Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda Race Report: San Diego
February 21, 2011 1:20pm
The stage was set for a tough night in San Diego for the Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda team. Already down two riders with Christian Craig and Travis Baker suffering injuries earlier in the season, Cole Seely would carry the TLD flag by himself in a rain-soaked Qualcomm Stadium.
The rain was inevitable, although crews were able to keep the track in relatively good shape for the night program.
Cole got a decent start in his heat race, rounding the second corner in the top five. Cole stayed focused, made a charge and was able to pass two riders, including the No. 100 of Josh Hansen, putting his Honda in third place at the checkers.
In the Main Event, Cole didn't get the start he was looking for. He was 7th after lap #1 and had his work cut out for him. He was able to find good speed despite the weather conditions.
Out front, Eli Tomac was checking out. Late in the race, Cole Seely worked his way up to the Pro Circuit duo of Tyla Rattray and Broc Tickle, and a heated battle for the last two spots on the podium ensued. Cole took a few shots at those guys, but ultimately crossed the finish line in 4th. Cole's determination spoke volumes for the team.
"I am just stoked I could turn in a solid effort for the team," said Cole. "Everyone works so hard and I have to hold up my end of the deal, you know? I caught those two pretty fast but couldn't pass them. They were riding solid. We have some time off until Seattle and I plan on being back on the box."
