Renegade Fuels Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki Ste Julie Race Report
Teddy Maier claws back into title contention at Ste Julie
Kamloops, B.C.(July 27, 2010) Round six of the 2010 Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals saw a return to the scenic Circuit de Ste Julie near Montreal, Quebec this past weekend and the Leading Edge team looked to rebound from a tough showing the week before at Ontario's Gopher Dunes.
Teddy Maier, who won here when the series last made a stop at Ste Julie in 2008, was excited to put himself back on top and wasted no time in doing so as both Renegade Fuels powered bikes were 1 and 2 into the first turn. Maier grabbed a second place start behind his teammate, Spencer Knowles, Maier wasted little time in passing for the lead and leading the rest of the moto to take the win. Behind him, Knowles rode a solid race to take a well earned seventh place finish. The win allowed Maier to take back a few more points from Championship leader, Tyler Medaglia, in the hunt for the 2010 title.
In the second moto, Maier again set his sights on the front of the pack and put in a strong effort to work his way up to second. Maier narrowly missed out on the win, which was taken by local hero, Kaven Benoit. In a twist of fate, Medaglia suffered a mechanical failure and could not finish the race, putting Maier only 14 points in arrears of the points lead after the day was over. Maier said after the race, "You never want to see anyone have any problems but I'll take it any way I can. I feel bad for him (Medaglia) but I had my own problems earlier in the season and it's just part of racing. That's why we race, it's not over till the end and I'm excited to be able to claw back some points today." Coming in behind Maier was his teammate Knowles with another solid ride, improving his first moto finish by one place to take 6th.
With Shawn Rife out with an injury this weekend, the team had a unique rider take his place on the C4MX, Renegade Fuels powered Kawasaki KX250F. Former National podium finisher and now magazine editor, Ryan Gauld took the reins and rode to very respectable 14-14 moto finishes for 14th overall. Look for a story on his experience to appear in a future issue of MXP magazine.
The team now heads to the east coast, as the series moves on to River Glade MX near Moncton, New Brunswick for round seven of the series in one week's time.
