When Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Chad Reed and San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart were both out of the Monster Energy/AMA Supercross Series, plenty of people were talking about how much faster the top remaining riders seemed than normal. Some people were even saying that the two champions would be in for a bit of a surprise when they returned to action, because the youngsters had stepped up their game.
However, it seems no one told Reed.
Reed showed up today at Daytona and, although he has yet to announce that he’s in for the actual races tonight at Daytona Speedway, he dropped a time in the first 450cc qualifying session that had him fully one-half second faster than everyone else in the class, including second-overall qualifier Ryan Dungey of Reed’s former Rockstar/Makita Suzuki squad.
Reed put down a 1:02.830 in the first qualifying session, and Dungey’s best was from the first session as well, with a 1:03.338.
Third in 450cc qualifying was Reed’s teammate Ryan Villopoto with a 1:03.441 in the first session, and fourth and fifth were Davi Millsaps and Trey Canard. Then came Kevin Windham, Tommy Hahn, Grant Langston, Josh Hill and Kyle Chisholm.
During the week of riding prior to the Daytona event, though, Reed reportedly went down while practicing and injured his right thumb. The word “fracture” has been used, although it has not been confirmed. Also uncomfirmed is whether or not he’s going to race tonight, but the chances seem good that he will, considering the effort the team went through in order to provide bikes for three riders tonight – Reed, Villopoto and Nick Wey.
In the 250cc class, it seemed very likely that the times from the first session would stand, as the AMA had a jump cut down to prevent a quad combo on the back straightaway, but Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel still put in a faster lap the second time. It was the fastest of all of the times, and he finished with a 1:02.237 – the fastest time of anyone all day, regardless of bike size.
Second went to his teammate Dean Wilson with a 1:03.501, followed by Nico Izzi’s 1:04.056, Austin Stroupe’s 1:04.067, and Brett Metcalfe’s 1:04.339.
Rounding out the top 10 in qualifying were Martin Davalos, Justin Barcia, Ryan Sipes, Kyle Cunningham, and Matt Lemoine.
Davalos went down in the final Lites qualifying session, though, and didn’t finish. He should be back for the races.
