Team Dragon Racing Fuels Race Report: Indy
February 24, 2010 2:09pm
As the snow flurries fell onto the Lucas Oil Stadium parking lot, the excitement rose through the city of Indianapolis. No, the Colts were not celebrating the raising of the Lamar Hunt trophy for their recent American Football Conference Championship, another trophy was about to be contested… the East Coast Supercross Lites Division was taking the stage! Reigning Champion, Christophe Pourcel has an incredible amount of talented riders wanting to take that title from him in 2010 and two extremely gifted rookie riders are stepping up to be heard! The Dragon Racing Fuels – 1-866-KTM-PART Team consisting of Taylor Futrell (64) and Tevin Tapia (211) were making some noise!
Indianapolis is not only special because it is the debut of the new season, it is also the home state of Dragon Racing Fuels. Based in Lafayette, Indiana, Dragon Racing Fuels brings a new exciting fuel brand to compliment the new Team. Using the Legend Series Fuel JM-6 exclusively, Team Dragon Racing Fuels – 1-866-KTM-PART looks to show Supercross the excitement of the “Holeshot in the Can”. After a successful two mornings of press days and morning television shows, Taylor and Tevin were ready to hit the track and get the Series started! After successfully qualifying earlier in the day, the night show began with the thunder and lightning that signifies Supercross.
The First Heat Race introduced Taylor Futrell to the Supercross world. The drop of the gate and the rising cheers rocketed the East Coast Lites Series rider around the first turn. Taylor rode perfect lines to put himself into a great position for a transfer spot. His momentum grew with each lap as he attacked the strenuous and difficult track. Taylor rode completely consistent and threw down his fastest time of the day on the fifth lap. As he took the checkers Taylor clinched the sixth transfer spot!
With the start of the Second Heat Race, Tevin Tapia brought his #211 to the line. Lined up outside, Tevin grabbed a handful of throttle and pulled around the first turn with the leaders. The first few laps proved that Tevin is a contemporary of the leaders that he is competing against. As the pack started to separate from the other riders Tevin had secured himself a spot in the Main Event with a ninth place finish. This sealed the two spots the Dragon Racing Fuels – 1-866-KTM-PART Team were searching for.
As Taylor and Tevin lined up for the Main Event, determination was all you could see in their eyes through the goggles. Both riders have spent their entire Amateur careers waiting for this moment. This is what they have trained for and this is what will be the start of their professional Supercross careers. Every person in the Lucas Oil Stadium was cheering as the gate dropped. At the first turn both Taylor and Tevin were pinched with Tevin being pushed completely off of the track and having to search for a place back in. Taylor was sitting mid pack and charging. As Taylor approached the wall, James Decotis hit the rider in front of him and stalled his bike and he rolled back into Taylor as he was climbing. The two riders locked up and Taylor had to jump off of the bike and literally pushed his bike up the face of the wall only to hop back on give it a full handful of throttle and try to catch up with the leaders. The incident unfortunately let the rest of the pack separate and put Taylor and Tevin in the catch up mode. As they approached the checkered flag on the fifteenth lap, Taylor came in at fifteenth and Tevin rolled over in nineteenth. Although the disappointment was evident in the pita area on the rider’s faces, a major accomplishment had been attained and the determination of the upcoming Atlanta race sat between the grinding teeth of Taylor Futrell and Tevin Tapia.
Chuck Newton, owner of Dragon Racing Fuels commented after the race that he was “thrilled to be a part of this incredible sport and looks forward to the partnership with Supercross and Motocross”.
