AMA Racing Ice Race Grand Championship
January 28, 2010 10:21am
Mount Pleasant, MI – Returning to the Midwest’s largest casino and resort for the second year in a row, the 2010 AMA Racing Ice Race Grand Championship raced into Mount Pleasant, Michigan this January 23rd at Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort.
The 2nd Annual Freeze X Fest proved to be a big hit among ice racers and fans as they enjoyed a Saturday of beautiful weather and exciting racing at Soaring Eagle.
“The track looks glassy-smooth… looks like they put a lot of time and effort into it, and I just can’t wait to get out there and rip it up”, said one ice racer as he anticipated his upcoming race.
Amateur racers from all over the country traveled to Soaring Eagle to race and enjoy the weekend. Other events included a freestyle snocross show from Winter X Games-bound riders Jimmy Blaze and Gunnar Gapko, a snowboard rail jam, and free demo rides on Yamaha’s full line of 2010 fuel-injected, four stroke snowmobiles.
“To come out here, watch and hang out is cheap entertainment… it’s just unbelievable to see everything that’s going on”, says long time racer and father Matt Crown. Matt’s son Joey had a good weekend at the Grand Championships, where he earned a 1st and 2nd overall in the 85cc 7-11 and 65cc 6-11 classes respectively.
Other Grand Championship winners from Saturday included Brett Boulis, Preston Conquest, Craig Pickett, Matthew Gross, Dustin Hoffman, Jace Kessler, Billy Travis, Daniel Kujala, Ricky Klomp, Zachary Balogh, Luke Guoan, Beau Sizemore, Keith Oboyle, and Aaron Clare.
Once racing came to a close on Saturday evening, racers and their families enjoyed a Freeze X Fest after party which featured live music and entertainment, as well as a variety of other entertaining activities including a stand-up comedy show from famous comedian Carlos Mencia.
Sunday morning brought a number of challenges that could simply not be overcome. After hours of rain and unseasonably warm weather, AMA officials and promoters determined that the track was unsafe to ride and therefore concluded the weekend at Soaring Eagle.
While the event was cut short with rain on Sunday, ice racers and spectators alike said that the event was a lot of fun, and that they can’t wait to see what next year brings.
