Unbound Energy’s Wharton & Barcia Go 5th/6th

  • Unbound Energy’s Wharton & Barcia Go 5th/6th

CORONA, Calif., –  Trey Canard, the top star on the Unbound Energy-backed GEICO Powersports/Honda team, was poised to score the overall victory at High Point (Mt. Morris, Pa.) on Saturday when he crashed in the closing moments of the 250 class’ final moto – while leading – and injured his wrist, settling for a 10th place overall finish (2-32).

Canard’s Unbound Energy-backed teammates on the GEICO Powersports/Honda squad, Blake Wharton and Justin Barcia, were putting in some consistently fast motos as well, racing to 5th and 6th place overall finishes, respectively.

Canard opened the pro racing on Saturday with a rough start that had him outside the top ten, then came around in 9th after the first lap. Mounting an immediate comeback, Canard worked his way up through the ranks of the world’s top 250 four-stroke racers ahead of him, passing the likes of World Champion Tyla Rattray and fellow European great Tommy Searle. Into 2nd place on lap seven (of 15), Canard was haulin’ and making up time on race leader Christophe Pourcel before running out of time.

“I felt strong and was able to push – knew my team set me up with the fastest bike out there,” said Canard of the first moto effort.

Unbound Energy-backed GEICO Powersports/Honda’s Brett Metcalfe would falter in the first 250 class moto, then rebound nicely in the second moto (7th) to salvage a 13th place overall finish.

As of High Point (round four) all of the Unbound Energy-backed GEICO Powersports/Honda riders were in the top ten overall in 250 class points, as was Dan Reardon (10th) in the 450 class. Canard 3rd, Wharton 6th, Metcalfe 7th and Barcia 9th.

Next up for Unbound Energy’s Barcia, Canard, Wharton, Metcalfe and Reardon is the fifth round of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA MX Nationals, the Lakewood MX National just outside Denver (June 27th).
