Spy Optic’s Carpenter & Windham in Top Ten

  • Spy Optic’s Carpenter & Windham in Top Ten
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Three Spy Optic supercross racers put in solid efforts this past weekend in Seattle as the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series, an FIM World Championship, begins to wind down to is last couple events of the 2009 competition season.

Leading the Spy Optic charge at Qwest Field this past weekend was Paul Carpenter (Monster Energy/Cernic’s/Kawasaki). One of the series’ top privateers, Carpenter had his best weekend of the year at Seattle, posting an 8th place finish in the premier SX class main event after being just a click (11th) out of the top ten in qualifying practice, then transferring to the main in 8th place out of the second heat race.

“Being from back east (New York) I’m used to racing ruts and conditions like this,” said Carpenter. “The team had my bike dialed and I just tried to ride smart, limit the mistakes and push hard at the end. Some of my best laps came in the latter portion of the race.”

Carpenter also said that his Spy Magnetos worked “unreal” in the gnarly conditions at Seattle, a testament to how Carpenter had to race back through the pack (from 13that one point) to score his 8th place finish.

Right behind Carpenter in 10th was Spy Optic’s top SX racer, Kevin “K-Dub” Windham (Geico Powersports/Honda). Windham was on it early, scoring the third-fastest qualifying practice time (behind James Stewart and Chad Reed). In his heat race Windham was 3rd again, this time behind eventual race winner Ryan Villopoto and Stewart.

In the SX class main, Windham – who’s currently 5th overall in SX class points (204-203 ahead of Mike Alessi) – pulled a descent start (8th) and had moved up to 6thplace by the midway point of the 20-lap contest. Windham held onto 6th place through lap 15, then dropped a number of spots on the following lap, eventually placing 10th.

One spot back of Windham in the SX class main event, in 11th place, was Spy Optic’s Nick Wey (Boost Mobile/ampm/Monster Energy/Troy Racing). Wey was on a mission after not qualifying for the previous main event (Jacksonville, Fla.) as he transferred to the main out of the first heat race (8th) and rode strong throughout the main, finishing on the lead lap right behind Windham.

Next up for the Spy Optic supercross racers is the penultimate round of Monster Energy Supercross at Salt Lake City’s Rice-Eccles Stadium (April 25).
