Unbound Energy's Trey Canard Places 4th
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Unbound Energy-backed Trey Canard came up big in a heat race and then rode a solid main event to finish 4th in the WSX Lites class’ San Diego event, while his Unbound Energy-backe teammate Dan Reardon escaped a potentially disastrous wreck at round seven of 2009 Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship.
Canard (Geico Powersports/Honda), who was the subject of this week’s Speed Channel rider profile before the race, brought it all together the first heat race, pulling the holeshot and winning his first heat of the year. “I’m just trying to get the confidence back,” said Canard, who went down in a gnarly wreck at the second WSX race of the season in Phoenix. “It’s been a rough season, so we’re just trying to get it turned around.”
Also running well early at San Diego was Reardon, who placed 5th in the first heat race – having run faster lap times than Canard in practice (50:010 to 50:086).
With both Unbound Energy-backed riders in the main, the gate dropped and Reardon blasted out to a 3rd-place start. But on the fifth lap he’d (Reardon) tuck his front tire into a whoop and came crashing down on a Tuff Block. Things nearly got worse quick for Reardon as Jake Weimer came thisclose to T-boning him while he was on the ground. Reardon got up from the narrow escape and would finish the race, but well off the pace of the leaders.
On that pace, though, was Canard. Starting in 4th place right behind Reardon, Canard moved into podium position following Reardon’s wreck and held onto 3rd place for a bit before he was caught by Weimer – the WSX points leader heading into San Diego. Canard would complete the remainder of the race in 4th place – his second-best finish of the season, which moves him into 8th place in the overall WSX standings with 54 points, five points back of Reardon.
Round eight of the 2009 supercross is scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 21, at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. It marks the return to ESX Lites racing for Unbound Energy’s Brett Metcalfe and Blake Wharton.
